i mean. the smaller kernel you have the faster it boots. so, if iam compiling the kernel my self, i need to know what stuff is not needed to me. for example: i dont need to use modem, so telephony support can be supressed. but there are a lot of things that i dont have any idea what are the for. like NETFILTER Xtables support, is it really needed? or its specific? RAM/ROM/FLASH chip driver? etc
There is a help option for most items. In general, compiling something as a (M)odule will not make your kernel bigger if you don't have the hardware that matches that module (it will just make compile time a bit longer, but chances are you'll be doing something else while the kernel is compiling).
There is a certain amount of trial and error with rolling your own kernel. Do your best, and if it doesn't boot.. back to the drawing board.
Hi All,
I seem to have an odd problem. I compiled in a new kernel( 2.6.28 ) and then booted into it successfully. But in the GDM login screen, my mouse does not move and nothing I type shows up on screen. The really odd part is that I can still use CTRL-ALT-F1 and get to a terminal just fine and can issue commands there. My caps/num lock keys work while on the GDM login screen. I just cannot type anything into the login boxes (or even tab around) and the mouse refuses to work.
Toggling between the terminal and GDM does not resolve the problem and restarting GDM does not work. I have had to reboot to the older default ubuntu kernel to get it back working. I have done this several times so far but never faced this issue.
I'm using sony vaio laptop keyboard and USB mouse if that adds clues.
Any ideas??
Thanks!
I recently built my own 2.6.27.5 kernel, and immediately went to building a .7 patched kernel.
On the dpkg -i step you will have issues with the .5 kernel installed, with one of the /lib/fw files already being installed, and it will error out on you trying to install .7.
In order to avoid it - I actually removed the 2.6.27.5 dpkg, and then installed the .7 package.
Not exactly the most comfortable way to install a new kernel, but it does work - and it's not so uncomfortable if you have more then one kernel already installed.
When trying to make the 2.6.27.8 kernel, there is only one DEB package in /usr/src, linux-image-2.6.27.8_386_i386.deb. The guide says there should be two.
ok ive compiled lots of kernels for other distros already and never ran in a problem like that, here it goes:
whether i compile 2.6.27 or some 2.6.28 i get always the same problem, that is that my console for some reason doesnt support high resolutions anymore.
for testing i took the ubuntu default config, and just switched some minor options around and BAM no (for example) vga=791 support anymore, this means, the screen goes blank while booting and comes back on when Xserver is loaded. everything else works great. any ideas pls? :)
thx!
questioning, perhaps this will help: http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php...postcount=1057
