I am running on 11.10 (did update from 11.04) and looks like the problems/solutions are just the same!
I think the wiki page is the best place to document: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AspireOne522
I've just got a new AO722 today. I've installed Ubuntu 11.10 after going through the install of the abomination that is Windows 7. Nevertheless, I haven't been able to sit down with the laptop and really use it on Ubuntu just yet. What fixes as seen in the first post are actually applicable to Ubuntu 11.10? Cheers.
Hey all,
I and my laptop have been following this thread intently, we really appreciate all the help. There is one thing I can not get fully going tho and that is full 720p video playback with no chop (mkv, avi, mp4 -- h.264)... I have the latest proprietary drivers installed on Ubuntu 11.10 x64 with 4 gigs of ram. Xine seems to be the the best so far, but the CPUs jump to almost full load and doesn't seem to be utilizing the GPU. Have been testing with PowerTop. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Derek
BTW another helpful tip, if you want to do a fresh install of 11.10 from USB use Yumi to load it onto the pendrive and the install will work (I read that 11.10 install direct was broke on the wiki)
Hi, I am wondering whether anyone else experience webcam problem with AO722. The webcam on my machine is recognized as. Running cheese shows just a black window. Running it VLC using the commandCode:Bus 002 Device 002: ID 04f2:b209 Chicony Electronics Co., Ltd

Thanks zzarko for all those tips! Just applied them to an install of Xubuntu 11.10 and couldn't be happier.
Running xfwm4 as window manager (no Compiz, too slow) and the opensource drivers. The machine is extremely responsive.
When compared side by side with the same machine running Win7, the netbook boots 10 seconds quicker and the apps (compared Firefox and LibreOffice) come up MUCH faster. Everything in Windows seems so sluggish.
A few more comments:
1) Dont' forget to install the preload daemon to speed up your machine.
2) The patched mplayer referred to in this forum (#35) allows me to watch smooth 720p in Smplayer. Also, upping the performance with Jupiter helps.
3) Xfce's volume daemon doesn't work and the volume keys are inactive. You can disable xfce4-volumed from starting up and bind the Fn-Up/Down to amixer commands instead.
4)Making the microphone work in Skype is still tricky. Tried to uninstall Pulseaudio and run on pure ALSA but then the microphone produces horrible noise.
5)Package gpointing-device-settings works well in Xfce to enable two-finger scrolling.
5)With Jupiter set to conservative settings plus Xfce power manager set to blank the screen and spin down the disk on idle time, your power consumption should be equivalent to the Windows version.
6) I found that not only is Compiz slow, it overtaxes the GPU and drains the battery. Better stick with a simpler window manager (Xfwm4, Mutter, Openbox) and get some serious computing done.
Hope this helps or motivates someone!
A happy Xubuntu netbook user.
Do you get around 7-8 hours of battery life? The most I have gotten with the open source drivers is around 4 (even with a simple Openbox set up in Arch Linux), sadly. :( If they gave more I would happily remove Windows 7 entirely and use Linux and them all the time. >.>
EDIT: I have to partially take that back about the Win 7 bit, because I have not actually used the Windows 7 install on it in ages despite leaving it on for the suspend ability. xD
I've managed 6h25min on the Acer in Xubuntu 11.10. Decent for me.
Key settings:
1. Followed the OP's directions. The GRUB ASPM trick and Jupiter are critical.
2. Dimmed the display 50% on battery.
3. Set to spin down disks on idle.
4. Set my HDD filesystems in my /etc/fstab to disable journaling of acces times with the noatime switch. This prevents the disk from being constantly written.
5. Disabled Bluetooth
I also found that the Win7 claim of 7 hours is a bit of a stretch. Reviewers obtained 6h53 with light web browsing. I found that power consumption increases a lot when you start launching more programs, perhaps because Windows is heavier on the processor and disk.
Cheers!
I would just like to Thank Zzarko and everyone in this thread. I'm running Linux Mint 11, but almost every tip here has worked just fine. I still have problems with the AMD drivers, as it seems impossible to get the HD acceleration running on the C-60 processor of my machine, but what can I do except waiting for new drivers to come out?
