Re: Folding@Home Team Ubuntu recruiting notice
I know, very odd. I thought I'd post though, because after hearing so often "But, you HAVE to fold with a GPU!", and for the trouble, I ended up getting only 3k PPD for it. Trouble being:
- HAD to use Win XP because I couldn't get it working otherwise...
- Had to upgrade my power supply to handle it.
- Had to shell out more dough for electricity.
- Had to buy an $80 (and that's cheap) video card.
- Lost PPD more frequently due to F@H GPU client crashes.
It's a Win XP box (still).
Re: Folding@Home Team Ubuntu recruiting notice
I think that if you had been using a $600 GPU, you might have seen a better GPU output and missed the performance.
However, each of my i7 server farm units cost $600 total and pump output 18-24k ppd each (depends on the work units each day).
I have the 'big' $600 GPU in my main Ubuntu system, and therefore have the bigger case, lots of fans and huge power supply. I don't use the GPU for FAH (the 6 core AMD does that FAH work on this unit). If I had to do it over again, I would not have moved up to such a big GPU.
Frankly a PS3 or Xbox are better bang for the video game buck.
I may play with CUDA programming on it someday, but it has a limited feature set compared to CPU based programming.

p.s. The AMD system has a simple water cooling system on the AMD 6 core (from Antec) that works a treat.
The six shuttle based servers in my farm are using the air cooling that comes with the Shuttle cases (They call it ICS) and it works fine. They have been running 24/7 without a hiccup yet. If they work for that first hour at 100% load, they seem to just keep running without complaint forever after that.

I've just noticed the teams million WU's milestone has just been passed, well done all.

Re: Folding@Home Team Ubuntu recruiting notice
That is a very real milestone! Thanks for noticing and reminding us all that however much we can each fold - it all matters and helps a lot.
Keep up the good work everyone! And thanks for helping out a great cause.
