(64bit) Only 2gb out of 4gb ram is detected, OS is working SLOW
Hello,
I switched to Ubuntu 64bit from Windows 7 which worked quite fast on my pc. My first problem is that Ubuntu detects only 2GB out of 4GB, that worked fine on wins and I'm not sure how to fix it here.
Second problem is the overall slow working of the system. I provided some info of my system, hopefully someone will take a look and tell me what is messing with me and how to fix it. It often lags when I play movie files, or HD youtube videos, it is actually very related to video, but my HDD often strugles to read when opening certain programs like Clementine or Ubuntu Software Center, but not always, Dashboard is also quite laggy first few seconds. It is similiar to having infected pc using windows OS, everything is laggy, slow and needs time to open. I thought linux was for low spec machines but it can't even run smooth on my pc, I expected more and hopefully I'll get more of it.
I'm still considering whether I should reinstall to 12.04 and see if its better or not, thought I would give it a try here first.
Thanks for the help!
This is a 12.10 version of Ubuntu 64bit.

Re: (64bit) Only 2gb out of 4gb ram is detected, OS is working SLOW
It could be something simple like a defective or unseated RAM stick. Make sure they're both pushed down into the slot properly. Try running memtest from the boot menu for a while and see if it throws up any errors. You could also try removing the sticks one at a time, if the machine failes with beep codes at boot then the one your removed is good and the one remaining is defective.
As for sluggish video, it looks like you have an AMD Radeon video card. Have you installed the drivers for it? Go to Software Sources and check the drivers tab to see what drivers area available.

Will test the RAM sticks now by removing them, as for Software Sources, under Additional Drivers tab it is all blank and it says No proprietary drivers are in use.
Re: (64bit) Only 2gb out of 4gb ram is detected, OS is working SLOW
you need to use command lshw in terminal to get a list of hardware components. then copy and post the output results here.
memory chip is read differently in linux than in widnows so it is not unusual that faulty ram is found in linux while it is not found (yet) in windows.
linux can be used on older mashcines with lower hardware specs, btu it all depends on desktop environment chosen to do the job. for example unity in Ubuntu uses 3D acceleraiton by default . if your GPU is poorly supported or drivers not installed porpperly etc. this would mean you will have issues with desktop.
for example e17 or LXDE will work aith 256MB ram or maybe even less. try Lubuntu in live session you will see what i mean.
theer are also versions of linux that work on 8 or 16MB ram. but depends hwo fiull of an experience they offer.
bottom line Ubuntu is not kind to really old hardware and has certain requirements to run smoothly and super fast.
in this case it seem either propper graphics drivers are not installed or they are installed wrongly.
memorry could be a bad stick as mentioned.

This is because AMD dropped support for your card a few months ago and as such don't provide drivers for it any more (although you can still use the old driver if you are prepared to run 12.04 instead of 12.10). You are already using the open-source radeon driver which is the only one available.
Re: (64bit) Only 2gb out of 4gb ram is detected, OS is working SLOW
Personally I have had serious issues with 12.10.
There are two ways around this for me, use 12.04 which is far more stable or use another linux spin.
Right now I am giving out suggestions to try openSUSE 12.2 as for me its very solid and works almost flawlessly.
Re: (64bit) Only 2gb out of 4gb ram is detected, OS is working SLOW
Last year I bought a well know big brand name laptop, quadcore, fast, etc.. As it turned out, it wasn't so great. Any videos - whether it be playing movies or trying to watch flash videos, were all laggy and jumpy. I'm no fool when it comes to the hardware and the like so I messed with various things for several months and decided I either got a bad piece of hardware or they used something weird in the one of the bridges. Either way, it was the nature of the beast. All I know is I finally just sold the thing and went back to an ancient Dell 1501 dual-core Sempron/2 gig memory laptop, and it runs better than the other did. I have a friend who also tried one of the same laptops new and ran into the same problems.
So, sometimes it just seems to be the nature of the beast. Normally this is indeed a video driver issue, sometimes combined with a CPU and memory issue.

That sounds like the way forward to me. Or else buy an el cheapo Nvidia card off Ebay and slap it in.
Incidentally Disturberer, what do you get when you put the following into a terminal:
Re: (64bit) Only 2gb out of 4gb ram is detected, OS is working SLOW
Thank you everyone for such a fast reponse! Looks like I'll switch to 12.04 first, check RAM sticks and then go from there.
Few more commands that you asked me to run or shorter version of above specs.

This part of your output indicates that you have 2 RAM slots on your motherboard, one of them is empty and the other has a 2GB stick in it. If you are sure you have 2 x 2GB sticks installed then this points to one of them not being seated properly in its slot.
