Grub appeared randomly, keyboard doesn't work anymore on hdd boot.

Hey there,
So I recently upgraded to 13.10. It seemed to be working fine until the other day.
Now I get a grub menu where I didn't before, and I can't use the keyboard to scroll through it.

Its weird because I've only gotten a grub menu before when I set up a dual boot, which this machine is not.
When I use a live cd, the keyboard works, but when I'm booting from the hard drive (when I get the grub menu) the keyboard doesn't work.

I think I did an upgrade the other day to upgrade packages, this is the first time something like this has happened to me.

any suggestions are welcome.

I should also note that they keyboard (tried wireless usb, and wired usb) works when I am trying to go through the main bios menu, but then stops when I get to the grub menu.
