C&C Generals video crash with wine

I used to be able to run C&C Generals : Zero Hour with only light skipping in the videos between missions. As of wine 0.9.45 the skipping has become so bad it's virtually impossible to get through a mid-sequence video (it more or less loops over the same part all the time, with only slight progression measured in milliseconds over a timespan of something like 5 seconds).

Anybody know a fix for this?

I tried setting hardware acceleration to 'none' in winecfg like it says on wines appdb, but after I run the game I check winecfg only to find out that acceleration has been set back to full again.

Again, any takers?
