Re: HOWTO: NTFS with read/write support using ntfs-3g (easy method)
Maybe i wasn't really clear also
In the last update, i put out unmount_ntfs-3g scipt because, since the hal bug was resolve, it was possible to just right-click>eject (handle by gvm/hal) as normaly. The thing is for an unknow reason, unmounting of ntfs-3g don't work well with eject (at least for my usb key) when transfering large file. Normaly, the majority of the file are transfered during the unmount (it's why it take so much time), but this transfer is stop before the end with the eject button, and i don't know the reason.
Since i don't have enough time to look at that, i'll just readd the unmount_ntfs-3g script. I'm working on it right know.
This may be due only to the specificity of my device, but the safest solution is always the better.
Re: HOWTO: NTFS with read/write support using ntfs-3g (easy method)
This is assuming that we are mounting external drives. Otherwise the internal drives with fstab directives should be okay, correct? I think the safest route is the best. At this point of development, we should not be so maverick concerning our data.
My experience the past 2 week has been pleasant. I've shuffled and copied about 30gig of files to and from my ext. usb drive without problems.
thanks
Re: HOWTO: NTFS with read/write support using ntfs-3g (easy method)
Ok, i understand better ;)
For information, when i choose eject for my external hard drive, i see a powerloss to my external drive. The drive go offline, and back online after few seconds. (with and without ntfs-3g drivers)
Is that normal ?

That's normal. It doesn't turn off my ext drive and it shouldn't auto-mount.

For me it does turnoff... The powerled goes to black...
But after turning on, it's true that it does not auto mount.

I'm using the Astone IsoDrive 300. I would love not having to manually turn off my ext drive after un-mounting. Wanna trade? Anyway, are you sure it's not a feature to your ext drive?
edit: you mean the light flickers. The light flickers on my drive also. It never looses power. How do yo know it looses power? the 3.5 ext drive should have it's own power supply to the AC adaptor. Is yours getting power from the PC's USB connector?
Re: HOWTO: NTFS with read/write support using ntfs-3g (easy method)
Ok guy, it's upload.
As i see, all was quite ok for you with eject.
It's surely specific to my usb key. I don't know how different work usb key and usb disk, there is surely some security or something on the last one (never used one), but since it fail with me, it's safer to recommand the unmount script for the moment.
I add a notification ala firefox, what do you think of it, it's probably to much  . As always, feedback are welcome.
@telperion : thanks you for your report. Sorry for that.
I need some more information, so it could be possibly fix by the linux-ntfs team.
- What is the version of the driver you use?
- what are the option you pass in /etc/fstab
- Did you lose some file after scandisk, what kind of file, in which quantities?
- What kind of operation did you do to those file before it happens (moving/coping/creating/renaming...)
Thanks again.
