Some new experience with amd 1.5 GHz on edge 13? Maybe someone here bought this machine
I have it with windows 7 and ssd hard disk installed , runs quick and fast and last night I watched avatar 720 mkv connected to my lcd using the hdmi port without problems . I use it for office, lotus notes , browse and anything but games and video editing
Now with 10.04 out I will try to install it the next week and I will report back .
I am very happy with this thinkpad .
I have both the AMD and the Intel version of the 13" Edge. I love both of them. The AMD is mine and it has virtually replaced my T400 at home.
My wife's Intel edge does run cooler and quieter as well as having a longer battery life.
They are both sweet machines. I can get ~4 hrs life on my AMD.
Everything works except the headphone jack. Sound comes out speakers even when headphone is plugged in and no sound comes out the headphone. I think it is the funky comb headphone + mic jack. It works fine in Win 7
I am running Ubuntu 10.04 x64 and Win 7 x64
My wife hated her Dell 10v [my sister loves it :-)] but uses her Edge all the time.
I hope this helps

Thanks. You use L325 (AMD 1.5 GHZ) or L625 (AMD 1.6 GHZ)? Could you describe more specified the behaviour of fan/noise. I am pretty sensitive on noise (use for now MacBook White and before that fanless Dell Mini 10v). How often does it switch, has it high or low frequency, does it work always in background or it spinning fast, than slow... actually, how much annoying it is...
Thanks a lot for help
I do find the fan comes on much more frequently with my AMD. It is low frequency and doesn't bother me but it is pretty constant.
I have the L325
On my wife's intel when I surf the fan rarely comes on. It comes on when she plays games (hidden object & crystal type) as I would expect. I haven't tried the intel edge on Ubuntu but I haven't notice a significant difference in fan noise between win & ubuntu on my AMD.
I don't think you'll go wrong with either. I was a little concerned about the game performance on the Intel since it doesn't have dedicated video memory but it seems to work well for her games. It is noticeably faster than her Mini 10v. When I called IBM they recommended the Intel over the AMD for gaming and while I haven't done any head to head framerate tests it seems faster ad is definitely quieter and cooler.

PS I found a fix for the headphone jack here:

Duh! Never listen to sales people. The AMD comes with a 780G integrated gpu (aka as HD3200) which is still one of the fastest non discrete gpu's out there, while the intel comes with a x4500HD crap gpu. The AMD is at very least 2x faster (with much better driver support) and in some cases the difference is a lot bigger:

(scroll down to Internal Grapics)
The cpu might mitigate that difference a little bit, but do run some gaming benchmarks, and I will eat crow if the intel machine is faster at any gpu bound load.
I got an Edge 13 AMD recently.
So far it is good, but had a few problems with Ubuntu 10.4.
Before I did a bios update, it was running hot when playing movies. I didn't realize how hot, until I noticed it has blistered the paint on the bottom of the machine! :(
I have now updated the bios (download a Windows app on the Lenovo site, though I think it can be done without Windows) and installed some temperature monitors on the gnome panel so I can see if it looks like it is getting too hot. So far so good.
Can't get bluetooth to work. Not played with it much, as I don't have much use for it yet.I can turn it on and off from the windows partition, it then shows up in Ubuntu but still didn't get it to connect to anything yet.
Wireless is a bit crap. The initial Ubuntu download didn't really work. Connected for a minute or two then dropped (as far as I can remember). I updated the kernel which helped, and it then connected reliably. It still seemed to crash when wireless disconnected an tried to reconnect. I posted on some forums and it suggested downloading the divers from the Realtech site. I tried that a couple of days ago. Seems to help. I did have a crash yesterday, and not sure it was for the same reason. It may also be related to the computer being idle, when it turns the screensaver on or something.I need to see if it is still an issue, and happens regularly.
Headphone / microphone jack didn't work at first. I upgraded the drivers, and it now works, but sounds noisy when you have headphones in, and no sound coming out. I saw a post about an ALSA upgrade script that could well fix this. Not got round to trying that yet. (It is a dual headphone / mic socket, and I haven't checked if the mic part works yet).
Found some hacks and things to get two finger scrolling working. The lines don't seem to make a difference (when the machine starts up) when added to .bashrc / .bash_profile. Typing the lines into a terminal activates thetwo finger scrolling.
The ATI drivers for the video card work well! Played movies through our large screen TV using the HDMI connection. Would be nice if you could add the "clone display" (to the second screen) functionality from the 'monitors' app in the preferences / gnome panel, rather than have to go to the administrator version of the ATI app, just to plug it into the TV. Automatic detection of the TV being plugged in would be even better
Sometimes flash was a bit funny - the controls on flash based media players wouldn't always function. Doesn't seem as bad recently. I read that it was due to the 32 bit version of flash being used with a wrapper.Apparently getting the 64 bit version from adobe can help this, I haven't had a chance to check this yet.
I guess buying a pretty new model like this, combined with a relatively new Ubuntu release wasn't really the easiest option for an easy install but the machine seems to have a pretty solid feel to it, so hopefully once I get the rest of these small things fixed, then it will last a while.
Battery lasts a bit over three hours. I haven't tried to optimize this at all.
Fan is OK, not too noisy. Not silent either. Ramps up a lot when playing flash movies.Pretty quiet when just browsing the web or whatever.
