12.04 - Wireless Connectivity
I recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my new desktop and I am unable to use my wireless. The wireless detects the networks in the area and asks me for my password and attempts to connect. After about a minute or two it asks for the password again without ever connecting. Is this a driver issue? or something I can fix with a simple command?
My Wireless card is the Gigabyte GC-W300D.
I believe it is Atheros AR5BWB222

Re: 12.04 - Wireless Connectivity
Hi, copy and paste this command in the terminal (ctrl+alt+t) please:
Code:
wget -N -t 5 -T 10 http://dl.dropbox.com/u/57264241/wireless_script && chmod +x wireless_script && ./wireless_script
It will download a script and create a text file in your home folder with wireless information so we can see the condition of your wireless at this time and the Mac address, WPA key and WEP key are removed for your security, then reply back, click on the paper clip and attach the netinfo.txt file.
Thanks
-
Re: 12.04 - Wireless Connectivity
How can it download a script if I can't get on the internet? I am currently on my laptop asking this
-
Re: 12.04 - Wireless Connectivity
I am sorry but you did not say that you do not have ehternet either.
Please follow the directions in this link for using the script with no internet.

Re: 12.04 - Wireless Connectivity
Sorry about the non-ethernet, student housing... 1 ethernet in the house in the most inconvenient place... quite annoying. Anyway, after some USB troubles I finally got the file for you.
here are the results.

Re: 12.04 - Wireless Connectivity
Hi, looks like you have a bug, please try:
Code:
echo "options ath9k nohwcrypt=1" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/ath9k.conf
sudo modprobe -rfv ath9k
sudo modprobe -v ath9k
Also which network are you trying to connect too?
Thanks
-
Re: 12.04 - Wireless Connectivity
It's Bell868, :P can't wait to change student housing and actually control my wireless/have ethernet and I'll try those
-
Re: 12.04 - Wireless Connectivity
You can try the commands now, it will not hurt anything and you do not need to be connected to the internet to run them.
Thanks

Re: 12.04 - Wireless Connectivity
FATAL: error inserting ath9k(/lib/modules/3.5.0-23-generic/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/ath/ath9k/ath9k.ko): Invalid Argument
error using the sudo modprobe -v ath9k
-
Re: 12.04 - Wireless Connectivity
what should I do after getting that error for sudo modprobe -v ath9k?
-
Re: 12.04 - Wireless Connectivity
Did you copy and paste the commands? if so please try it this way:
Code:
echo "options ath9k nohwcrypt=y" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/ath9k.conf
sudo modprobe -rfv ath9k
sudo modprobe -v ath9k
Thanks
-
Re: 12.04 - Wireless Connectivity
-
Re: 12.04 - Wireless Connectivity
I tried entering them one by one, copy and pasting, etc... the final command still gives the same error previously stated.
-
Re: 12.04 - Wireless Connectivity
From what my research says it is a bug but the only solution is to try a different kernel.
I have the same driver with the 3.8 kernel and it works good but I still have to have everything set the way that I showed you in the post.
Try to add the parameter like this please.
Thanks
-
Re: 12.04 - Wireless Connectivity
this may be a stupid question but how do I switch to the 3.8 kernel?
-
Re: 12.04 - Wireless Connectivity
You can try to add the parameter like this first:
Code:
gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/ath9k.conf
Add one line:
Code:
options ath9k nohwcrypt=1
Proofread carefully, save and close gedit. Reboot.
If that does not work which I have my doubts at the moment you willo need to install new kernel, I will have to get the directions together.
I am sorry I did not reply sooner my computer crashed and I just got it working but not all the way yet.
-
Re: 12.04 - Wireless Connectivity
That didn't work :/ I'd appreciate instructions on installing a new kernel ^.^ and no worries, I just want to switch to linux because I'm more comfortable with it. I can still do work on Windows for now.

Re: 12.04 - Wireless Connectivity
Go to this link:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa....8-rc7-raring/
If you have a 64 bit system download:
linux-headers-3.8.0-030800rc7-generic_3.8.0-030800rc7.201302081635_amd64.deb
linux-headers-3.8.0-030800rc7_3.8.0-030800rc7.201302081635_all.deb
linux-image-3.8.0-030800rc7-generic_3.8.0-030800rc7.201302081635_amd64.deb
linux-image-extra-3.8.0-030800rc7-generic_3.8.0-030800rc7.201302081635_amd64.deb if 32 bit then get the ones 386.
Install with software center just double click on the debs.
Reboot
Thanks

Re: 12.04 - Wireless Connectivity
I've downloaded those and I attempted to install them but the install button is locked... how do I force it?
-
Re: 12.04 - Wireless Connectivity
Are you using a 64 bit version of ubuntu? be my guess you must be using 32 bit that is the only reason besides needing to enter your password that I can think of for having that issue.
Thanks
-
Re: 12.04 - Wireless Connectivity
I'm using 64 bit, and I double click those files and it has the install button disabled asking me to install a package of the files.
-
Re: 12.04 - Wireless Connectivity
I think it wants you to install one of the other packages first, so try another and leave that one to last.
Thanks
-
Re: 12.04 - Wireless Connectivity
I tried that and it still doesnt allow me to, as I said, it has the install button greyed out and disabled
-
Re: 12.04 - Wireless Connectivity
Can you install anything using software center?
-
Re: 12.04 - Wireless Connectivity
No because I don't have internet but the reason it's not allowing me to is because it's saying it wants me to install the entire package not one of the files, yes I have tried all of them. Is there not an overide?
-
Re: 12.04 - Wireless Connectivity
If it will not let you then there is probably another issue and trying to force it would most likely break your system.
Thanks
-
Re: 12.04 - Wireless Connectivity
Ok... so just give up on getting internet on a ubuntu distro?
-
Re: 12.04 - Wireless Connectivity
I will ask my friend the wireless guru to take a look.

Re: 12.04 - Wireless Connectivity
Let's see what errors or warnings we get when we try the updated kernel. First, what architecture do you have; 32- or 64-bit?If you get i686, that's a 32-bit system and you'll need these packages:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa...81635_i386.deb
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa...081635_all.deb
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa...81635_i386.deb
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa...81635_i386.deb
If you get x86_64, then you'll need the amd64 packages Wild Man referred to above. Please download whichever you need and place them on your desktop. Then open a terminal and do:
Code:
cd Desktop
sudo dpkg -i linux-*.deb
It ought to install all four at once. Then reboot and see if your wireless is working.

Re: 12.04 - Wireless Connectivity
I installed 3.8 using the method described above, it doesn't really change anything. I tried the previous code again and it still gave an error at the last command. After trying those commands however my wi-fi no longer picks up networks and only gives the option for VPN.. so I don't know what's up. Should I re-install Ubuntu? and if so, how can I fix the error from a new installation.
echo "options ath9k nohwcrypt=1" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/ath9k.conf
sudo modprobe -rfv ath9k
sudo modprobe -v ath9k
-
Re: 12.04 - Wireless Connectivity
Tired of this Atheros problem I bought a Sweex LW311 Wireless 300N PC Card (Ralink chipset).
-
Re: 12.04 - Wireless Connectivity
Please confirm you rebooted into the new kernel:Please show me the result of this exact sequence:
Code:
sudo modprobe ath9k
dmesg | grep ath
Thanks.

Re: 12.04 - Wireless Connectivity

ath9k: `y' invalid for parameter `nohwcrypt'
Indeed it is! According to modinfo, it should be an integer; i.e. 0 or 1. That's exactly what the Wild Man asked for:
Quote:
echo "options ath9k nohwcrypt=1" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/ath9k.conf
Let's experiment just a bit:
Code:
sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/ath9k.conf
That should get rid of the file with the typo. Now do:
Code:
echo "options ath9k nohwcrypt=1" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/ath9k.conf
Check the file:
Code:
cat /etc/modprobe.d/ath9k.conf
It should report: options ath9k nohwcrypt=1.
Reboot and tell us if your wireless is working better.

Re: 12.04 - Wireless Connectivity
oops that makes sense, haha I was thinking that was the issue but didn't know exactly what to do to change it. Anyway, my networks appear again and it attempts to connect but we are back to the same issue of it attempting to connect and then stopping and asking for the password and trying to connect again.
-
Re: 12.04 - Wireless Connectivity
Let's have a look at:
Code:
cat /etc/modprobe.d/ath9k.conf
dmesg | grep -e ath -e wlan
Thanks.

A Google search suggests this is a well-known bug, although I did read a report that suggested, at least in one case, a hardware defect. Please check here: http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.linu....general/99873
They suggest the compat-wireless package, however, before you do that, I'd suggest you download and burn the 12.10 live CD and see if the errors go away and, better yet, your wireless works. If you are a bit adventuresome, then I'd just go forward to the 13.04 daily build: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ I have run it myself trouble free, although I'm not sure I have tried every function and feature there is.
The advantage of the live CD is that you can try it before you install it. If you do decide to install, back up and back up!

Re: 12.04 - Wireless Connectivity
Thanks for the help :/ I know it's not hardware because I can use it on my Windows installation. I'd LOVE to use 12.10 or 13.04 but they aren't letting me live boot... get stuck on loading screen/go to black screen after load screen. Also, my installation is not affected by windows as I have it on a separate hard drive altogether.

Re: 12.04 - Wireless Connectivity
Hi, please post the output of:
Code:
cat /etc/lsb-release; uname -a
modinfo ath9k
iwconfig
rfkill list all
lsmod | egrep 'ath|firm'
Thanks

Re: 12.04 - Wireless Connectivity
We fixed another persons issue with this same card by compiling a new driver for the device, they are using a different kernel I believe then you are so we would probably need a different version of the driver that is why I asked for the information in my last post so we can see exactly which kernel you are using now.
Thanks
