Re: HOWTO: Lexmark Printers
I have a Dell 924 printer which might work with Lexmark drivers. I followed the startpost procedure and some procedures from other posts. I'm at this point that I'm able to create a new printer and select the pps driver(s). Everything looks OK but no printing at all. Can someone please check below if something went wrong in the process? :)
-Is it OK that I don't get output when I do this? This should be important for printer backend to find libraries:
$ sudo ldconfig
$
-Then I tried this:
$ /etc/rc2.d/S19cupsys restart
bash: /etc/rc2.d/S19cupsys: No such file or directory
-When I browse to the specific dir, I see this:
/etc/rc2.d$ dir
README S30gdm S89atd
S01policykit S50avahi-daemon S89cron
S10acpid S50cups S90binfmt-support
S10apmd S50NetworkManager S98usplash
S10sysklogd S50pulseaudio S99acpi-support
S11klogd S50rsync S99laptop-mode
S12dbus S50saned S99ondemand
S20apport S50system-tools-backends S99rc.local
S20dkms_autoinstaller S70bootlogs.sh S99rmnologin
S20hotkey-setup S70dns-clean S99stop-readahead
S24hal S70pppd-dns
S25bluetooth S89anacron
-No S19cupsys there, so I tried this:
/etc/rc2.d$ S50cups restart
bash: S50cups: command not found
-Then tried if backend works, but NO output again:
/usr/lib/cups/backend$ dir
beh dnssd hp http lpd scsi smb socket z35
bluetooth hal hpfax ipp parallel serial snmp usb z600
es@es:/usr/lib/cups/backend$ ./z35
es@es:/usr/lib/cups/backend$ ./z600
es@es:/usr/lib/cups/backend$
UPDATE: did more research but still doesn't work
-In synaptic I installed al 'cupsys' items
-Some suggestions from other threads I used:
sudo mkdir /etc/cups/interfaces/
sudo gedit /etc/cups/cupsd.config
file is empty but added:
#AuthType Basic
#AuthClass System
-Added cupsys to the shadow group:
sudo vi /etc/group (added cupsys manually at the end of the shadow line)
-Restart of cupsys doesn't work, but this does:
sudo /etc/init.d/cups stop
sudo /etc/init.d/cups start
-I tried this to deactivate the AppArmor protection of CUPS temporarily:
sudo aa-complain cupsd
-Wich version of cupsys is installed:
dpkg -l cupsys | cat
Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
| Status=Not/Inst/Cfg-files/Unpacked/Failed-cfg/Half-inst/trig-aWait/Trig-pend
|/ Err?=(none)/Hold/Reinst-required/X=both-problems (Status,Err: uppercase=bad)

ii cupsys 1.3.9-17ubuntu3 Common UNIX Printing System (transitional package)
-I worked with CUP via GUI at http://localhost:631
I can add/manage printers and assign drivers. When I check System->Administration->Printing it shows a printer (with a green V or with a red hearth) but when I try to print it says that the printer is offline.
-I added a printer manually:
Via System->Administration->Printing and everything looks OK, it even says that the printer is online/connected. But nothing happens

Thats nice for you.
I have that printer, and this HOWTO is appallingly useless,
Either can't find directory or worse,
While trying to use alien (had to install it) nothing happened,
The bit that says binary literally does binary, the computers starts screeching from it's buzzer and the screen is filled with junk for a minute.
The commands requiring RPM come back as an error and I can't get beyond that as there is little point.
Things like this that make me want to just go back to windows and all the problems it had, at least it would just print.
I don't have time to sit for three hours today just reading 52 pages of a forum on the OFF CHANCE people have corrected something to make it work.
And between the complete lack of Java support and now this printer it is a wonder ANYONE who dabbles in computers can be bothered with this linux lark.
So 45 minutes wasted, one cup of tea drunk (can't stand coffee), and I am back at square one. Ubuntu won't print!
Anyone that actually can do a short step by step guide without 300 comments and without confusing the situation would be appreciated, and then perhaps get it put somewhere useful instead of page 53.
Or better yet, make it into ubuntu itself so I don't have to read yet another forum.
Re: HOWTO: Lexmark Printers
Interesting, in Ubuntu 9.04 after following only the list of instructions on page 1 I get this:
Code:
daniel@Egg-Carrier:/usr/lib/cups/backend$ ./z600
./z600: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Following more advice in the thread, I installed the v5 of the libstdc++ package which gets me:
Code:
daniel@Egg-Carrier:/usr/lib/cups/backend$ ./z600
daniel@Egg-Carrier:/usr/lib/cups/backend$
It prints but it says the lack of output for ./z600 means something is wrong. Oh well, it works once again after clean installing Ubuntu 9.04 from Ubuntu 8.04. Thanks guys!:p
Re: HOWTO: Lexmark Printers
Ok newbe here for ubuntu, a lot of this thread is going way over my skill level.
Before I start tryig to figure stuff out, has anyone actually managed to get ubuntu to work with a dell 725 printer?
If not it's a case of getting new printer or dumping ubuntu?
Re: HOWTO: Lexmark Printers
I googled this quickly and it would appear not,
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=511115
however, keep googling, you may find something different
Re: HOWTO: Lexmark Printers
Ive also just spotted that the link on that other article points back to here... resulting in a never ending loop of lexmark related pain
Re: HOWTO: Lexmark Printers
I had followed the howto on the Lexmark X6170 (using the z55 driver) at
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=419661 and was banging my head against the monitor, searching for solutions for my Lexmark X6150. It worked under Intrepid but I did a complete reinstall of Jaunty and I couldn't get it to go. It ran a blank test page and then all my test jobs just went to nowhere (the computer thought they printed but they didn't do anything). I suddenly thought, what if I unplug the printer. Sure enough. I disconnected the power to the printer and then powered it back up and then my print jobs worked.
Go figure. I hate my Lexmark printer. It is a pain in every way. I have to feed each individual sheet through.
Re: HOWTO: Lexmark Printers
Ok, I am back, and my printer will not print at all. I have a Lexmark x2600, and I deleted and reinstalled the driver but the driver says I need CUPS 1.2 or higher installed.
What Gives, I am using 9.04!! I am in desperate need of help here.
Re: HOWTO: Lexmark Printers
You might try the open printing page for this printer http://openprinting.org/show_printer...k-X2600_Series
and the lexmark site. Openprinting recommends the lexmark-inkjet-08-driver, which it says can be downloaded from the lexmark site. Is that the driver you are using?
Re: HOWTO: Lexmark Printers
you can get a new printer, or if you dual boot with XP, virtualize into your XP partition with virtualBox and print that way.
