Re: I don't know much yet
See the command line learning resources sticky at the top of the forum. There is wide variety of information there from beginner to fairly advanced. Commands are many times the easiest approach to a problem because they often work regardless of desktop environment or are only slightly modified.
Re: I don't know much yet
Take a look here. I am pretty sure that you will find at least one link which is suitable for you =). The first and the second one are pretty good IMO.
Ubuntu for beginners who wants to learn more? Perhaps try Debian. I find Ubuntu much more user friendly than Debian.
If you want to learn more, I would go with Crunchbang, or Arch linux. Keep in mind you can make live usb, so there is no need to install them.
Regards.

If you have questions about commands you're asked to run, please ask them. Someone sincerely trying to help will not be put off by this, but instead be glad that you're making an effort to learn. None of us were born knowing bash (well, I certainly wasn't!)

Hi, all
Many, many thanks for the replies, which are, as always, constructive and helpful.
I shall follow through the suggestions in the next week or two ( am currently very busy with work) and try to improve my knowledge of what I already believe to be a superior operating sytem compared to Windows.
Thenks, again
