Tip: How to get the blur effect of vista/7 with compiz.
Hello all. We all know that we have the OS with the best graphic effects out there, however, many of you wonder how to get the Vista blur effect on your transparent themes.I'll try to help with this.
Thanks to BobCFC at GNOME-Look.org for posting the original instructions here.
Ubuntu already comes with CompizConfig Settings Manager. Get to it by System > Preferences > CompizConfig Settings Manager.
If you do not have it, install it via Ubuntu Software Center or Add/Remove software.
Once in the settings manager (CompizConfig Settings Manager), click on "Effects".
Now, the fun part:
After you click on effects, click on the check-box next to "Blur Windows" to activate it, then click on "Blur Windows" to customize it.
Make sure that "Alpha Blur" is Checked.
Then, on "Blur Filter", change the option to "Gaussian Blur".
Once that is done, set the "Gaussian Radius" to 11 (you can play with ths later to achieve a custom effect).
Afterwards, make sure that the Gaussian Strength is set to 1.0000.
Finally, enjoy your new Blur effect.

This did nothing for me.
Are there any other settings (System > Preferences > Appearance > Visual Effects) or something else that needs to be set? BTW, I am set to Extra on that.

No, nothing else needs to be set.
Make sure that "blur windows" is checked and that "alpha blur" is checked.
Are you using an emerald theme? is it transparent?
