Getting Vdpau to work with SMplayer
Just switched from Ubuntu to Xubuntu in order to ditch unity.
Loving how fast this is. All I have done since doing an entire clean install was updates, then installed the lastest nvidia driver from x-swat ppa (version 304.51 in nvidia x server settings). I also installed xubuntu-restricted-extras as well as any other programs I use.
Now, when trying to run a .mkv that is h.264 encoded with either smplayer, or mplayer from terminal, I get the same error no matter what I try.
Where did I go wrong?
Videos play fine using VX but take up about 50% of my core 2 duo.....:icon_frown:

Re: Getting Vdpau to work with SMplayer
Re: Getting Vdpau to work with SMplayer
there is another problem regarding VDPAU and videos encoded in P010 10-bit format.
videos encoded in 8-bit run without problems with vdpau.
Only when I switch video to XV or GL2 do 10-bit videos play.
Is this normal? I'd like for them to use less CPU resources if possible.
Smplayer gives me the following error message when playing 10-bit files. is it because of the subtitles?
Only solution is to install Mplayer2 and SMplayer2 and disable the vdpau h264 acceleration option in the config

Re: Getting Vdpau to work with SMplayer
VDPAU does not support 10 bit video because the nVidia GPU h/w decoder does not support 10 bit video.
Higher bitrate/better encoding would be more usable than 10 bit..
