Vista Pre-RC1 - Anyone trying it?
Anyone else testing this? My initial impressions are pretty positive - at least the indexer isn't as annoying as it was in Beta 2, this time the indexer backs off when I'm doing stuff.
Except for the graphic card, I got all my hardware working using Windows XP drivers.
Some pics if anyone cares -

IE7, still cant move the buttons and address bar around. Bleh.
New stuff -

Resource Monitor and some sort of PC Health Monitor, both provide plenty of detail, I have no idea what those numbers mean though. All I know is that Vista wants me to install an anti-virus software.
Oblivion works - heh! I just installed the game and copied over all my fan-made mods and save files -

Re: Vista Pre-RC1 - Anyone trying it?
Nope, I haven't tried it. I have Beta 2, but I haven't used it in a while. It did run fine on my machine though. How were you able to get RC1? Do they have a new download up for it? Was it a downloadable upgrade from Vista Beta 2?
Unless you had to have registered your Beta 2 copy. I never actually registered my copy because I ended up switching back to XP Pro after a few days. Vista was cool, but I had some projects and other stuff I needed to do, and I didn't want to be in the middle of them, experience problems, and have to reformat and re-install XP, so I did it ahead of time.
Re: Vista Pre-RC1 - Anyone trying it?
Microsoft sent me an e-mail telling me about the Pre-RC1, guess they wanted more error reports before finalizing the RC1 build :p . It was a new download, I did a new install so I don't know if it's upgradeable from Beta 2 or not - sorry. ;)
Huh? If you didn't register your Beta 2 copy then how were you able to install it? IIRC, Microsoft sends you the CD key through e-mail, the keys from Beta 2 are also used to install Pre-RC1.

I entered in the key they sent me, on install, but then once in Vista it said I had 14 days to register or activate my copy of Windows. I can't remember exactly what it was, but it was a 14 day deadline. I went back to XP Pro before the 14 days was up, so I never activated it. I was liking it though.
Re: Vista Pre-RC1 - Anyone trying it?
I waited on the pre-RC 1, since the public rc is due out soon. I have been running Vista Beta 2 since it was relased, and no major problems...
Re: Vista Pre-RC1 - Anyone trying it?
I think there are plenty of exciting things going on with Vista, the GUI is not one of them though.
For some reason everyone hypes or hates the GUI when it's really the security features, the network stack and the new CLI that are the exciting news.
Re: Vista Pre-RC1 - Anyone trying it?
I didn't find info anywhere in Microsoft homepage so I am asking here.
Few days ago Microsoft offered to download Vista Pre-RC1 100k times from their site. I downloaded it seccesfully. Now I'm thinking about installing and using it not only for testing purposes. How long will I be able to run Vista Pre-RC1? And if I will be using it at the time the real thing comes out will new upgrades aply to my Pre-RC1 or not? Will Microsoft ask me to some money for "legalizing" Vista?

Here's how it works: if you had a beta2 install, then you can get the pre-RC1 activated. All betas and RCs expire June 2007, at which point, you need to do a complete reinstall with a licensed version.
Re: Vista Pre-RC1 - Anyone trying it?
Thanks for the answer. I though about almost impossible: Microsoft giving Windows Vista legal copies for those who were registered as testers. A  great  thank-you-gift for all supporters, you know. ;)
Well... that won't happen.

MSDN testers do get it for free, as part of their subscription. The rest of us were "given the gift of access" to beta test this behemoth, and so we have to pay. :x
