For now I am able to get rid of that high contrast by using FF preferences/content/colour/background colour and changing that to a greyscale.
Untic 'Allow pages to choose their own colours...'

Re: Welcome to the upgraded forum!
On a 1920x1080 screen with Firefox maximized I get just one line of content.
Who approved this design? Is there any competent supervision in these forums?

You have to be kidding right?
So far this massive transition looks great to me.
I reckon it could take weeks to tweak it to perfection.

I completely agree with Xgen; it is hard to scan the titles to find a topic where I think I may be able to help. This is especially so for people whose eyes are not working as well as they used to (yes, I'm talking about me).
Important variable text (such as the titles in the forum page) should be black-on-white. Just as in a book. It is by far the easiest for people to read.
It's a pity that Canonical chose orange for Ubuntu; it has never been the best choice. Is there any leeway on the colour? Even if all you do is darken the hue?

You can set your browser to ignore fonts and colors and set your own instead. I do it, most pages have bright white background that hurts my eyes if I look for more than 1 minute.

Unfortunately, it affects all websites, not just the offending ones.

For the bright background, I use Redshift.
Code:
sudo apt-get install gtk-redshift
It works a treat.
Re: Welcome to the upgraded forum!
Gotta agree with the comments about the red text on the thread list pages, really hard on the eyes and makes it hard to focus on the subject of the titles.
Last night after being on the forum for a couple of hours, looking for threads I could help on, my eyes were burning and my blink rate was very high. The red/orange text looks good at first glance but after reading for a period of time causes eye strain.
p.s. I'm an old fart too.
For the most part, kudos on the transition,
I'm sure the small things will improve over time.

agree with Vaphell. Looking from my work machine 1680x1050 getting very little actual content displayed on a single screen. I'm hoping with time the opportunity arrives for a condensed style choice.

Yes. Aside from the orange text, it's looking good with only a couple of little niggles.
One of the niggles, which no one has yet pointed out: on the first page, every forum name, apart from the last in each section, ends with a comma.
