Does a NAS drive need built in media server?
I currently have an old desktop on ubuntu 13.04 with Plex which i use to serve videos to my TV and PS3. I was thinking of getting a NAS drive for backup and media streaming to replace the desktop.
question is - i see some NAS drives have built in media servers (like some WD MyBook Live), do i need to get one of these to still access videos through the TV or PS3?
Re: Does a NAS drive need built in media server?
It depends what protocols (smb, dlna etc) are supported on your TV, but generally you need DLNA (multimedia server) to stream videos, music and pics to PS3 or TV. However, almost any modern NAS has the ability to install additional software, so you can replace the default media server.
