Who knows?
Try a live usb to see how it does, though I suspect that the unity interface my be a bit heavy for that machine. Maybe Xubuntu would be better.
Ubuntu 12.04 will be supported until April 2015, so why install a newer Ubuntu?
And ... next April the new LTS version will be published, and the lighter versions Lubuntu 14.04 and Xubuntu 14.04, which, as ajgreeny already said, you also might try. The 14.04 versions will be supported for 5 years.
Topsiho
To Howefield: IMHO it IS 2015. 2017 is for servers. 3 years updates for the desktop, 5 years security updates for servers. From April 2012.
The in between versions are supported for only 18 months, the very new versions for only 9 months, so it might be a waste of time to upgrade to 13.10. Is supported only until July 2014.

Just my two penny-worth; Xubuntu 12.04 is supported till 2015, Ubuntu 12.04 till 2117, so perhaps Topsiho is confusing the two OSs.
