Wine/regedit, changing gdi to opengl
I was told that this makes most games (starcraft, most importantly) run much better. I looked into regedit for the entry I was supposed to edit, but it isn't there. In HKEY_CURRENT_USER there isn't even a directory for Direct3D. Is there something I have to install, or some other setting I need to change?
Thanks.
Re: Wine/regedit, changing gdi to opengl
No, you need to create a "Direct3D" Key within the "Wine" Key found in HKEY_CURRENT_USER, then create a String Value named "DirectDrawRenderer" in the new Direct3D Key. After creating the string, change its value to "opengl". You can create Keys and String Values by either right-clicking in the right-hand pane or by right-clicking on the directory in the file tree in regedit.
EDIT - You might want to check out WineHQ's Useful Registry Keys page for more info.
Re: Wine/regedit, changing gdi to opengl
Alright, done. That makes things faster for a second, but now after a few seconds, the mouse stops moving and Wine crashes, right at the game's main menu.
Re: Wine/regedit, changing gdi to opengl
What errors are output to the terminal when the game crashes?

Re: Wine/regedit, changing gdi to opengl
Hmmm, should have asked this from the start; what version of Wine are you using?
Re: Wine/regedit, changing gdi to opengl
The latest version from Wine's repository, 0.9.45
Re: Wine/regedit, changing gdi to opengl
That's what I thought. There appears to be a bug or regression in 0.9.45 that is causing graphics-related crashes like this in some games. Try downgrading to 0.9.44 and run the game again. You will need to uninstall Wine, then download and install the archived .deb package from here:
http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/archive/index.html
Re: Wine/regedit, changing gdi to opengl
Hm, now it's giving me dsound errors. I think I'll just wait for them to fix the regression, I don't want to re-do everything, especially since I downloaded like three games in Steam. Thanks for the help, though!

Is there a launchpad or other bug filed for this, so we can track progress?
