Thanks again...
Just off the top of my head, try the human theme that is the default if you are not using it. My sugestion if that doesnt fix it is do a Automatic script install to see if it solves the problem.
Re: Howto Install 32 bit Firefox with Flash w/sound and Java for AMD64
Well, ok... So I uninstalled firefox32, and then ran the automated
script to reinstall, as you suggested. I now still have 64-bit firefox
(1.5.0.5, though) with the java plugin successfully installed, and whose
menus all appear to be working properly. However, when run from the
terminal it complains as follows:
Code:
LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library
/usr/lib/j2se/1.4/jre/plugin/i386/mozilla/libjavaplugin_oji.so
[/usr/lib/j2se/1.4/jre/plugin/i386/mozilla/libjavaplugin_oji.so: cannot
open shared object file: No such file or directory]
The file it complains of not being able to find seems to be right where
it belongs:
Code:
boomer@gobstopper:~/Desktop$ ll
/usr/lib/j2se/1.4/jre/plugin/i386/mozilla/libjavaplugin_oji.so
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 213016 2005-09-19 13:44
/usr/lib/j2se/1.4/jre/plugin/i386/mozilla/libjavaplugin_oji.so
I also now have firefox32 (1.5.0.6), with apparently both the java and
the flashplayer plugins installed, but whose File/File Open and Save
Page As dialog boxes are screwed up, showing only empty character
squares in place of letters. It also generates the following error
message on starting, which you said it was ok to ignore,
I remember:
Code:
ERROR: ld.so: object '/usr/lib32/libpangohack.so.0' from LD_PRELOAD
cannot be preloaded: ignored.
When I then attempt to use either the File Open or Save Page As dialogs,
I also get the following errors, in addition to unusable dialog boxes:
Code:
(firefox-bin:22394): Pango-WARNING **:
/usr/lib/pango/1.5.0/modules/pango-basic-fc.so: cannot open shared
object file: No such file or directory

Yet the file 'pango-basic-fc.so' DOES exist, though apparently both in /usr/lib AND in /usr/lib32:
Code:
boomer@gobstopper:~/Desktop$ locate pango-basic
/usr/lib/pango/1.5.0/modules/pango-basic-x.so
/usr/lib/pango/1.5.0/modules/pango-basic-fc.so

/usr/lib/debug/usr/lib/pango/1.5.0/modules/pango-basic-fc.so
/usr/lib32/pango/1.5.0/modules/pango-basic-x.so
/usr/lib32/pango/1.5.0/modules/pango-basic-fc.so
And finally:
Code:
(firefox-bin:22394): Pango-CRITICAL **:
_pango_cairo_font_map_get_renderer: assertion `PANGO_IS_CAIRO_FONT_MAP
(fontmap)' failed
(firefox-bin:22394): Pango-WARNING **: pango_font_get_metrics called

(firefox-bin:22394): Pango-CRITICAL **:
_pango_cairo_font_map_get_renderer: assertion `PANGO_IS_CAIRO_FONT_MAP

I suppose I could just give up on using firefox32, but I have the
feeling that this pango error, if that is what it is, might be easily
solved by a tweak or two... As always, any help is appreciated.
Re: Howto Install 32 bit Firefox with Flash w/sound and Java for AMD64
All install steps for firefox worked fine except for Adobe Acrobat reader.
In this case it works in all cases (tested, that is) but prining. When ever I click the print icon or file->print the section of the Firefox screen enclosing the Adobe reader clears to blank. No clue as to what is happening.
When I try to use the reader with the command line:
acroread file.pdf
the reader opens up with the message:
(acroread:8037): Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "qtengine",
appearing twice on the console before acroread displays the file.
Again, when I try to print, acroread dies with no message.
I am using KDE/kubuntu. Is there a possibility that another library is needed by acroread that is not on my system?
Suggestions greatly appreciated. ](*,)

Of corse it cant find it. The browser is 64bit, and the plugin is 32bit.

I have a feeling that something was messed up while you did the old manual howto. What that is I have no idea. You might want to try doing a search in synaptic for pango and reinstalling those packages.

Unfortunatly printing is one area I have not had any sucess. I havent yet figured out how to get the browser pages to print or pdf's.

Well if you can print from other things such as konqueror I think you might be able to just download the page and then open it again in the browser you can print from. This kind of defeats the purpose but...

Re: Howto Install 32 bit Firefox with Flash w/sound and Java for AMD64
annoying problem with the script here,
First off I am running 64bit edgy Ubuntu so probably has something to do with this.
When I run the script it freezzes on the configuration of j2re1.4... just hangs there i can highlight the OK but it won't take a click, so I have closed or force quit that window... the problem is I get
Quote:
E: The package j2re1.4 needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it.
from apt-get upgrade
and
Quote:
$sudo dpkg -P j2re1.4
dpkg: error processing j2re1.4 (--purge):
Package is in a very bad inconsistent state - you should
reinstall it before attempting a removal.
Errors were encountered while processing:
j2re1.4
from trying to remove with dpkg
the package is there.. but It just sits there and I don't know what to do with it.. Its also stopping me from getting any updates/upgrades done atm
so Kinda at a loss here](*,)
