Interesting... iFixit noted when they tore the new MBA apart, that the touchpad was the same as the previous model. Not having installed on an Air myself yet, I'm not yet sure which guide is the "right" one, but did you follow one, and have you succeeded in getting multitouch to work yet?

@dfacto: where you able to fix the issues with resolution and multitouch? Is the wifi working properly? how long does the battery last when using ubuntu? does it have any heating issues or any other issues worth mentioning? Thanks for your comments!!

Re: MacBookAir4,1 & MacBookAir4,2 (MBA 2011) support
Hey all. Sorry for not being very detailed in my earlier posts. I am trying to do this as quickly as possible as I *should* be working on my thesis. (I know everyone always tries to get Ubuntu running in five seconds--I'm not complaining per se!) Oh, and this is my first Apple (since my Apple IIc; been linux-only for a decade tho).
First, this is the Guide I followed:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBookAir3-2/Narwhal
Deviations:
0) As I mentioned, I needed to run refit's mbr sync twice; once before booting the live cd and once after installing grub.
1) I had to update-grub with "nomodeset" added to the defaults.
2) Obviously I ignored any nvidia setup stuff (which is the majority of the guide.)
3) I used options "snd_hda_intel model=intel-mac-auto" in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf although I don't know if it was needed. To get speakers on I had to unmute the "Surround" device in alsamixer. This was not discovered until after booting with the above alsa-base modified configuration.
Comments:
As I said, video is still stuck at 1024x768. Also it is "fuzzy" I suspect due to the 6bits/dithering not set (guide uses nvidia specifics).
By "no multitouch" what I should have said is that gestures don't seem to work (want scrolling). I didn't have luck with the five seconds I spent in xorg.conf. I used the intel driver with the multitouch input section per the guide and gdm wouldn't load. Xorg.0.log said "No device". There is a good chance it was user error--as I said I was/am hurrying.
I also cannot get fn+up==pgup fn+delete=="pc delete" and the like to work.
Hopefully you hackers can point me in the right direction on these problems! Once I have happy video and hid's then I will play with suspend but the priority is obviously video, hid.
The hardware profile is attached--I masked out any of the serial numbers--let me know if I took out too much (or too little!).
Cheers!

@dfacto: where you able to fix the issues with resolution and multitouch?
No.
Is the wifi working properly?
Yes--even worked in the livecd.
how long does the battery last when using ubuntu?
Only had this for 18 hours but IIRC I got 4-5 hours on default brightness with no peripheral devices connected.
does it have any heating issues or any other issues worth mentioning?
Runs icy cold. (My old sony vaio literally burns your finger-tips!)
Thanks for your comments!!
You're welcome--now help me make this work dammit! (j/k)
Cheers

Re: MacBookAir4,1 & MacBookAir4,2 (MBA 2011) support
Code:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude safe-upgrade
Did *NOT* seem to fix anything.
Also, using output of "sudo Xorg -configure" as my base config file for twiddling (which is not the one I posted before).
This is pretty much the end of the road for any ideas that I have. Suggestions welcome!
Re: MacBookAir4,1 & MacBookAir4,2 (MBA 2011) support
It might be worth trying an Oneiric Alpha LiveCD - I'm currently running Oneiric on my HTPC/server as Natty's Xorg is broken on this rig, and using xorg-edgers didn't help. Oneiric's Xorg works fine on this machine, might work for the MBA, too?
Re: MacBookAir4,1 & MacBookAir4,2 (MBA 2011) support
Thanks for the tip--will try right now. (I wouldn't have either--I was assuming edgers was sufficient.)
Cheers

Re: MacBookAir4,1 & MacBookAir4,2 (MBA 2011) support
@poliva Thanks for the idea. Here is what I tried:
Code:
$ cvt 1440 900 60
# 1440x900 59.89 Hz (CVT 1.30MA) hsync: 55.93 kHz; pclk: 106.50 MHz
Modeline "1440x900_60.00" 106.50 1440 1528 1672 1904 900 903 909 934 -hsync +vsync
$ xrandr --newmode "1440x900" 106.50 1440 1528 1672 1904 900 903 909 934 -hsync +vsync
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
$ xrandr --addmode default 1440x900
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
$ xrandr --output default --mode 1440x900
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
xrandr: Configure crtc 0 failed
The screen then blinks and stays the same. I think editing xorg.conf to include this modeline is the same unless I'm wrong.
Thanks for the idea tho!
