Looking for a Photo Editor
Hee hee... I just got Necro-nuked over here.
The problem I'm trying to resolve is that I need something for a non-techie. GIMP, bless it, is really complicated for someone who just wants to see a "resize this" button. While that may sound stupid to we of the infinite technical knowledge, GIMP really does lack a simple UX. I say the same of Photoshop. They are elaborate tools not focused on simple use cases. Because of that, it seems (seems...) like Ubuntu lacks something that can do very simple photo manipulation.
I ultimately pointed someone to fotoxx and PINTA.
Is there a better piece of software. They looked at ShotWell and if there is an obvious "resize this photo" it wasn't anywhere they looked.
PLEASE do not suggest GIMP, GIMP tutorials, etc. I know that will be overkill for this person, and it isn't what they are looking for.
And... I ask these questions because I don't run Ubuntu (Kubuntu FTW!) and am not familiar with the options out there.
EDIT: Clarification: I run Kubuntu. The person I'm trying to help runs Ubuntu. I'm not very familiar with the software options for Gnome/Unity/Ubuntu.
TIA!

And, no oops there. I was unclear. *I* run Kubuntu. The person I'm trying to help (via email) runs Ubuntu. So this answer is a big help -- and super easy!
Re: Looking for a Photo Editor
KDE apps will install in Ubuntu but drag in a heap of dependencies. Most are stable but I've had odd things happen when some obscure KDE artifact seems to be missing ... fixed it with a bit of tweaking though.
I use ristretto in Xubuntu. Just an image viewer, easy for resizing.

Normally, when installing KDE applications under Gnome, any missing dependencie will be installed. This does ot mean that these KDE packages will bite the Gnome packages, they will be "put away" seperate from the Gnome packages. Sometimes it does bite (GTk problems) but that doesn't mean that you cannot install KDE applications under Gnome.
Here's another thread about photo editors.

Yeah. I explained that to this person and they quickly became adamant that they wanted to stick as close to "core Ubuntu" as possible. They've listened to me moan about my upgrade process with the wacky things I do with PPAs.

Maybe try Ristretto, then. Lightweight and should be in repositories/software centre. There's a lot of image viewers/editors around. If you do a google search for:
'image viewer ubuntu'
... you should find plenty of info. Openshot's another though never used it myself (Gimp here). ;)
(PS: If she means she wants to stick with just open-source, how hardcore does she want to be? If being used, you would want to switch off all third party repositories if 'extreme' is the answer.)

What she means is that she's listened to me talk about adding this-that-and-the-other to have the "latest and greatest". Then, come version upgrade time, I run into wacky problems. She wants to avoid that by not having non-standard things installed.
PPAs are awesome, but they can really mess with an upgrade.
Re: Looking for a Photo Editor
LOL, yea, indeed. Now I got ya ... My thoughts? The latest is not always the greatest, at least not in my experience. Probably why I have three installs; one rock solid and two playthings (not that I've been playing with them much) so that doesn't matter! ;)
