12.04 - Crash after installed ati driver
Hi all!!
I don't know if it's the right section.
However, I have a problem to access to the system after installing the amd/ati driver.
I had the ati driver 12-4 installed yet on my system and everything worked well, but I decided to update to the 12-6 legacy driver, the last possibile for my video card.
So, I downloaded the file from the amd official site and I followed one of the many guides on the web to do a safe installation. At the end of the procedure, all seems ok, but at the reboot I have ubuntu 2d: tilt!!
I decided then to reinstall again the drivers, but the procedure blocks with a long series of errors; so, I decided to come back to the previous 12-4 driver, but it generated errors in this case too.
As last resort, I decided to activate the proprietary driver directly from Ubuntu: System Settings>Hardware Drivers, select the fglrx driver (not post-release) and click on activate.
After waited for the driver to be downloaded and installed, I reboot the system; now I'm unable to login by lightdm manager. In fact, when I click on login, it appears a black screen with some messagges for 2 seconds, then again the login screen.
The strange thing is that I'm able to login normally by guest user, while I can use only the console mode.
I tried also to install the driver by console mode, without results.
After this long explanation (sorry) do you have any ideas??
Thanks in advance :)
Re: 12.04 - Crash after installed ati driver
Purge the driver properly, there is only ONE way to do it unfortunately, and is the one in the Wiki here:
http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubu...allation_Guide
Precisely, do these (ALL the commands, do not skip anything !):
http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubu...talyst.2Ffglrx
Removing Catalyst/fglrx
The uninstall script in the first command will only exist if you downloaded the drivers and installed them directly (rather than building packages as this guide does). Skip the first command if it does not exist.
sudo sh /usr/share/ati/fglrx-uninstall.sh
sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx fglrx_* fglrx-amdcccle* fglrx-dev*
If you plan on using open-source drivers, you will need to reinstall some packages because Catalyst overwrites or diverts some key 3D libraries with proprietary versions. For more information on this issue, see this Ubuntu wiki page
sudo apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg-video-ati xserver-xorg-video-radeon
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-ati
sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx libgl1-mesa-dri xserver-xorg-core
sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup
sudo rm -rf /etc/ati
If you receive
$ E: Internal Error, No file name for libgl1-mesa-dri
Change the third command above to:
sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx:i386 libgl1-mesa-glx:amd64 libgl1-mesa-dri:i386 libgl1-mesa-dri:amd64 xserver-xorg-core
After you finished all, reboot, then install the legacy 12.6 Driver, following the same procedure in the same Wiki:
http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubu...TI.27s_site.29
Start from "Before you start" section, and skip the "wget" download, instead use the 12.6 Legacy you have downloaded. All the rest the same. It will eventually work !
After you installed, do not forget to:
Code:
sudo amdconfig --initial -f
This will generate your X config.

Thanks for your reply.
It's exactly the guide I used to install the driver and then to purge it, but still can't be able to login :(
Re: 12.04 - Crash after installed ati driver
For the sake, I tried the procedure again and nothing change.
One thing to note: when i type this command

Re: 12.04 - Crash after installed ati driver
Okay, so when you attempt to install fglrx, and run the amdconfig command as noted, you *should get a much different log when you restart.
Just to be clear, the driver install procedure runs smoothly, correct (no errors when making the packages or installing them)?

It's true for the first time I made the procedure; but at the reboot the computer had Ubuntu 2d, so something gone wrong.
When I tried again to purge and reinstall the driver, the procedure abort with a series of errors.
I can't remember the way to copy the output in a text file; if you can tell me how, I post it here.
Again, thanks a lot
Re: 12.04 - Crash after installed ati driver
After installing the driver, before reboot, post the output of:
Code:
sudo amdconfig --initial -f
Thanks ):P
