I know that previously when I've tried to use Ubuntu that the icons down on the taskbar have changed color with program activity, but currently they're not, and it's being a major pain. Does anyone know what I can do to get back that notification?

They do? They do not on my system. It is probably a program that you installed.
It usually did it by default. I found a Pidgin plugin that seems to do it for Pidgin, yet if that's the only ability to do it I'm someone disappointed. I need something to tell me when people are popping in on MUDs and MUCKs and such. >_>;;
I know the icon shades for minimized programs. I think KDE would highlight a focused window (The currently selected one).
The thing I was looking for was something where events within a program window would cause the program window to sort of speak up and let you know. One of the nice features of Windows. I thought it was something in Ubuntu, but I guess that was just Pidgin. Now I feel stupid. @_@
