What would happen, when 12.04 LTS be upgraded to 14.04 LTS?
Don't know, whether I should ask the question here, but as this is Ubuntu+1 thread, and we are going to have this 14.04 in 2014 April, I thought I might ask.
12.04 LTS has all the eye-candy with Compiz--3D windows, animation addons--while, later Ubuntus don't have them. These Compiz effects in 12.04 would most probably go away, when the time comes to upgrade to 14.04 LTS. Of course, there won't be Unity 2D too. Saucy would surely come with Unity Next and/or Mir. What might be the thinking for 14.04 LTS, considering 12.04 LTS?
I know the devs are not here, but what do we users think about that?
Cheers!

Since you have until 2017 until you have to change if you don't like 14.04 when it comes out you can always keep 12.04. but seeing as how they are working on a bunch of new stuff who knows what it will be like. as far as compiz goes you could always add it like you can in 13.04 though I think it is un-needed bloat.

That's true, it can stay until 2017, but the next LTS is 14.04. Unity needs Compiz yet, with or without the effects, but the next Unity would be based on Qt, I believe. Saucy, when it comes, would be different than Raring. By 2017, if someone keeps 12.04, that would be so different than the Ubuntu of 2017. LTS as such might be a problem with so many changes, which happens with every new Ubuntu release. I for one, really like the changes, so whether or not they match, I'd upgrade 12.04 to 14.04. Anyway, by that time, I'd have 14.04 just as I have Saucy now.:)
Ubuntu is the most daring, forward-moving distro in the Linux world today, with its changing DEs etc. And, that's why I like it.

At this point the plan for mir/unity next(8) on saucy is for it to be available in the repos, but not the default install.
So, at least for saucy, unity will be unity 7.
Here's what Mark Shuttleworth says about the plans for unity8 on 14.04. Among other things

Re: What would happen, when 12.04 LTS be upgraded to 14.04 LTS?
It is true that we lost many Compiz effects in 12.10 but a couple of developers have taken up the challenge. In the Saucy Salamander software centre look for compiz-plugins and you can get some of those missing effects back into CCSM. I now have wobbly windows back.
Who knows what Ubuntu 14.04 desktop will be like? We can read about aims and intentions. We can check out the designs of applications. But, in my opinion, it is best to wait until 14.04 is actually released and then run a live session. Or, install the Saucy Salamander development branch and update it daily until 13.10 is released and then switch to the 14.04 development branch and you will see the changes as they happen. That is the road that I am taking.
Oh, you can also follow the discussions on the 3 monthly virtual Ubuntu Developer Summits. That sometimes gives clues as to where the developers are trying to go. And then there are some blogs that some developers have. Check out the weekly Ubuntu newsletter. These are all sources of information. They are open to all.
Otherwise, everything else is opinion, especially on a forum.
Regards.
