Help me get this computer running right?
So I have a laptop which just became my backup computer. It has never run correctly, it sputters while playing youtube videos, and just generally sucks when I had windows 7 on it. It is from 2010 so it should not be that bad...
Specs:
Gateway NV52 - MS2274
AMD Vision (2.x ghz?)
Radeon HD3200 graphics
4 GB ram
here is the output of lspci:

I would like to get it running well with Ubuntu, I currently have 12.04 installed along with the drivers direct from AMD. It is still not running unity 3d well, and 2d only runs slightly better. I want to get this thing running like a boss so I have a good backup/play computer.
How can I get this to run better? should I install the 32 bit Ubuntu? and older version of Ubuntu? what should I do?
THanks for your help
Re: Help me get this computer running right?
use a lighter weight DE like lubuntu or xubuntu
keep 64bit
Re: Help me get this computer running right?
I have had good luck with xubuntu on older boxes. What kind of specs does that laptop have?

What was your experience with the default Linux Kernel video drivers? If you can try a vanilla install of 12.04.1LTS, might be worth a comparison - between the AMD video drivers and the default Linux Kernel video drivers.

I listed the basic specs, but here is the output of lshw:

Would just installing xfce be the same as installing xubuntu from scratch? Also is there a way to avoid all of the duplicate applications when doing this?

The AMD version definitely runs better, but it is still pathetic in the case of this particular machine. Putting youtube down to 240p still plays a slightly choppy. Its crazy, there must be something else that is causing this, I have seen much older machines run much better than this...
Re: Help me get this computer running right?
Sorry, I missed that.
You have dual core, plenty of ram, video card is 3d ready. You should be able to run Ubuntu. Maybe you need a driver. Have you updated since you installed?
http://www.googlubuntu.com/results/?...lubuntu.com%2F
Also you can try installing Gnome Classic and see if its faster.
Code:
sudo apt-get install gnome-session-fallback
But take a look at drivers first.

Well, I already have the ATI dirvers direct form amd made for ubuntu, those would be the best right?
I have also tried the default driver and the one suggested by ubuntu under additional drivers and all of them are still slow. Is there some other sort of driver I should be looking for, or when you guys say drivers are you simply talking about the graphics driver from AMD?
Re: Help me get this computer running right?
Im on Gnome Classic with no effects now and it seems to be running a little better, but still not like it should. This machine should be able to handle 1080p video no problem, right?
BTW, I have updated since the install, and everything is current and up to date
