Sorry for sending you a PM. I did not want to sidetrack that discussion. About you not being to install on WD passport 500GB, it could be because of the 137GB barrier that some BIOS have. You can google this for more details. But essentially, if you can create an ext* partition and install ubuntu within the first 137 GB of your external HD, you might stand a better chance of booting off of it.
