Ok thank you for the link to the Gimp ppa .. the source installs that I have done are working well but
it might be useful for later on to try on a fresh test install ....Cheers.

    Thank you Doug .....

Followed your steps to install Gimp 2.8 RC - but tried on my Arch install and they worked. great

I need to find out why 2 versions of glib ended up on my Ubuntu install - as they art stopping
me installing there ..... have a feeling this may be a re-install though.

Cheers for posting the how to ... as it cleared things up to have 2 versions of Gimp ..... for me.

I'm testing NVidia 275.36 x86_64 with Kernel 3.2.0-11 and, apparently, there is some improvement. Maybe you wanna give a shot to it.

I didn't had SS enabled, but just did a couple tests with it. It took approximately 22 minutes to break down. Yes, launching gnome-terminal (and other GUI apps) started taking more time than usual. Launching them from the terminal gives me no useful output and the same when running compiz/unity via terminal.

I don't know mc4man, we're talking about video performance issues in and out since the beginning of this cycle. I am suspecting of kernel now, although it sound unlikely - I know. But I did all I could in terms of trying previous versions of VGA drivers and their tweaks.

so what's the skinny on wmv3/wmapro support on x64 8.04 Heron? I've been reading through a number of threads (some very long) and I see your posts everywhere...Kind of confusing...Right now I can only get video+sountrack with ffplay -fs video.wmv (barebones player). Mplayer seems the only possiblity. Can I use Andrew's guide and do I have to separately compile mplayerplug-in for firefox?

You've been too helpful so need for personalized step-by-step instructions, if you could just point me to a howto or guide, having a hard time getting my head around all this...

I think I must be using the SVN build, because this is what I ran:

    svn checkout svn:// ffmpeg
    cd ffmpeg
    ./configure blah blah ...
    sudo checkinstall --pkgname=ffmpeg --pkgversion "3:0.svn`date +%Y%m%d`-12ubuntu3" --default

I uninstalled the previous version beforehand too.

Let's go with the patch for can post the commands now or later, I won;t be able to get to it before tomorrow.
