    Hello Herman,
Its been quite a while my friend. My daughter still asks about you to this day. She still remembers skyping with you on the webcam.

I have a Dell laptop that just stopped booting. Its the one I use for astronomy, telescope control. It was duel booting Win7 and Meerkat. Hard drive was showing in post and bios. Put gparted in and the drive is showing that it is completely unallocated. I don't know how that happened. What do you think. Do you have time to help?

Hope all is well down there.

Hi Herman! You don't know me but I'm a fan of your work on the dual boot site. I did some looking around trying to find someone with a level of skills that I have to help on an issue over my head. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...7#post11128407

If possible, please take a look at this and see if you can help. He has an unmountable ntfs partition that he needs to salvage data on. He also has an lba flap on the extended partition. The boot info script posted an error keeping the partition from being mounted but I don't know how to help without a good amount of risk.

    Thanks much, Jim
  3. So Skype has been sold to a certain well known software company, along with any personal details people were required to register themselves with and any additional details they may have been tempted to offer.
  4. Do I use Linux at work?
I'm just not the kind of person who can tolerate being restricted to working within the limited confines allowed for by even some of the most expensive proprietary programs. I can't help it, I'm just always thinking 'outside the square', and guess what, when I'm allowed to do things my way, I almost always find new ways to do things that turn out to be better. John Wayne once said 'Never face seven men with a sixgun.' I think that applies to operating systems and software these days as much as it applied to survival in the wild west in the old days.

    Hi Herman,
I just signed into Skype a minute or two ago on my smartphone to see if I could catch you. I am at work right now. I just by chance looked at your profile on Ubuntuforum and saw that you had answered me. I thought I would have gotten an email saying that I had a message but I must not have that clicked in my settings. I get emails when someone responds to my posts though. I'm also glad to know you are doing well. My wife is due to have or 6th daughter in April. We must be out of or minds....
Where should I IM you from? Within Skype once you reinstall it? This GIS stuff you mention, is that something your doing in Linux? Well you have fun with it and I'm sorry I was AWOL so long. Life is funny like that.

    Take care,
    Buddy
  6. Hello fewjr, I'm here but I have been relatively quiet for a while.
I still monitor the forums here frequently.
Lately I am interested in subjects concerning GIS and GPS work. I'm only a beginner, but I'm having a lot of fun with Quantum GIS and Tango GPS, GoogleEarth, GPSPrune and other associated programs.
I am not yet a beginner with python yet but I am starting to look at it more and more and I think I will probably become addicted to it when I get started. I want to make some scripts for GPS/GIS work as soon as my capabilities will allow.
I uninstalled skype but I intend to install it again sometime. I'm glad you're well.
You may send me a PM if there's something I can help with, and a link to your post in would be great! I don't know much about networking but I'm pretty good at finding information about almost anything and I hope I'm good at explaining technical subjects in layman's terms. I have a job now doing that basically, although ostensibly I'm employed for GIS work.

    Hi again Herman,
Could you let me know if you are out there still. I need your help...lol. I hope you remember me. My daughter still talks about our skype friend down in Australia. Its been awhile, so I'm surprised when she brings it up.

    Hi Herman,
Just thought I'd send a hello down under to you. I have just reinstalled Ubuntu. I went with Meercat this time and I let it reinstall the bootloader on my GRUB partition with grub2. Still duel booting with WinXP. I can't get wifi working with my Dlink/Atheros AR5008 card though in ubuntu. I had that same problem with Ibex. I don't know what to do yet. I posted in the wireless/networking section today. I hope all is going well for you. Talk to ya later
