I wanted to point out the great support I got from System76 last month. I had a possible hardware issue, and because I had an imminent Iraq deployment they squeezed me in and fixed the issue very, very quickly.

It was great working with a crew that was helpful, knowledgeable, and really were proud of their products and their service. I have no regrets buying from System76. Thanks, guys!

Hi, about a day ago, my Starling battery appeared to have stopped charging. When I moved my mouse over the power thing on the panel it would say

'computer is running on AC power/ Laptop battery charging (16.2%)/ Battery charge time is currently unknown'

It then said that for hours. Actually I noticed that it changed very slightly over the course of the day--it seemed to be charging extremely slowly. Like, about a percent an hour. I tried disconnecting them and letting everything cool, which didn't help, and I tried letting the battery run until it shut off, which also didn't help--so now the battery is at 0.0%. Any idea what I should do?

I need to use the Ethernet port on the Windows partition of my Pangolin to set up internet at my new apartment. Two years ago, when I first had Windows driver issues, I was linked to the site of the manufacturer (asimobile.com), which had the driver for my model.

Problem is, the driver links on that site no longer work. They actually don't exist. It just says 'Click here', and its not even a link.

Is there any other place to get Windows Ethernet drivers? My only other option is to go to a Barnes and Noble for the free internet, download the User Agent Switcher plugin for Firefox, and hope it tricks the AT&T activation pages so I can activate it from Ubuntu :).

The Pangolin is one of the old Values panv2 or 3 - I bought it in December 2006. Whatever the Value model was back then, is what I have. I'm not entirely sure, but I can check later today.

Hi Everyone,

I'm holding onto Ubuntu 9.04 for now, but in the meantime I'd like to upgrade Evolution to 2.28.1 which Ubuntu 9.04 came with 2.26.1. One of the main reasons for upgrading is the latest version of Evolution supports All Day events on the calendar which has been preventing me from importing my calendars into Evolution since I always setup birthdays, anniversaries, etc as such.

Anyway, this is the only post with someone trying to install Evolution 2.28.1 on Ubuntu 9.04, and it wasn't a success. Has anyone else tried it? I haven't tried yet on my system, but given Novell nor Gnome offer a DEB file it'll need to be installed from source. Not a biggie, but it looks like there may be some problems.

Just thought I'd ask before embarking on what will probably become a frustrating venture.

Also I don't know if this matters, but I'm running a PanP5 system with the stock version of Ubuntu 9.04 that shipped from System76 with all updates.

Thanks,

Sam

I recently bought a Meerkat Ion. I have found solutions to three problems that were hard for me to find, so here are the solutions:

1. Unable to play video at 1080p out of the box. Specifically, Matroska files with h.264 video compression. Here's how to fix that.

Add "ppa:nvidia-vdpau/ppa" to your repositories in Software Sources. It will poof up to "http://ppa.launchpad.net/nvidia-vdpau/ppa/ubuntu karmic main" after you add it. Reload when it asks.

Add the package "nvidia-190-modaliases". This will make it possible for Karmic to detect the Nvidia 9400M architecture.

Go into Hardware Drivers and activate the 190 driver.

Install mplayer, smplayer, x264, xine-ui, etc. Then go into the Preferences of each player and select VDPAU as the output driver.

For more information, read https://launchpad.net/~nvidia-vdpau/+archive/ppa Make sure you check out the hdr-wallpapers package. There are some really beautiful images.

2. No HDMI audio output.

I experienced this problem when the Meerkat Ion first arrived. Then I reinstalled Karmic and the problem occurred again. I think this is an issue with Karmic muting the IEC958 channels.

Run "alsamixer" from the terminal. Scroll to the right until you see the three IEC958 channels. Press "m" to unmute them. Sound should work immediately.

3. Problems with SDLMAME/GMAMEUI.

I've had a very annoying problem with SDLMAME having crappy audio and then crashing my system when I exit by pressing the ESC key.

Install the package libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio. This will uninstall the package libsdl1.2debian-alsa, but it completely fixed the problem.

The System76 driver did not work out of the box, but that may be because the BIOS is not properly installed. System76 support is helping me with that.

I bought the Meerkat Ion originally to be an HTPC. It has the Nvidia Ion (9400M) chipset with HDMI output and 7.1 audio, so there was no reason why it couldn't be. Since I got the video working correctly, I've been able to play all my 1080p files quite well with one of the CPU's running at only about 20%. I'm not sure why they put a fan in there. The Atom 330 processor should not need a fan and the Nvidia Ion contains the 9400M chipset which is designed to only need a heatsink. But the computer is built like a tank, it's small, and looks good with the rest of my black TV components.

I added an Adesso Wireless Mini Trackball Keyboard which I highly recommend. I have the TV in my bedroom and I sit on the bed with the keyboard in my lap, and I can watch movies, surf the web, etc. I also have two 1TB hard drives attached to it via USB with my movies and music. So far it's doing what I want.

I hope this helps.

First, let me start by saying I'm completely new to Linux and not a developer of any kind. Here has been my issue so far.

I received my Starling today and it was great for a few hours until..... I clicked the magic update button and (unfortunately) updated to Karmic Koala. After the install, my WiFi was gone and the WiFi LED indicator was off. I immediately came here and saw that was a big mistake as 9.10 is causing issues with the Starling and WiFi. Reinstalled 9.04 by following the instructions here. http://knowledge76.com/index.php/Restoring_Your_Netbook

WiFi was back up and running until I applied the 2.4.0 system drivers. Once that happened I lost wifi again... LED is off again too.

Any suggestions? Downgrade to System76 driver version 2.3.9 or 2.3.7? Can I do that just by bringing them over in a flash drive? Reinstall Ubuntu 9.04 (again) and not install any Starling drivers until further notice??

Any help I can get would be much appreciated!! Thank you.
