Never thought i would see a game get played more on Linux than OS X or even the PS3 or Xbox 360!

Why can't a game company at least give us a couple of modern games for Linux?

What? id releases all of its games on Linux, and Valve is going to soon.

I would hardly use a poll about ETQW (While a really killer game, and I enjoy playing it) to be used as a litmus test for the market share of linux native gaming.

I would say that linux gaming market share is increasing.

Yea but look at how long we are having to wait for UT3. We've been waiting forever and all we get are random articles from phoronix giving us questionable screenshots.

As for valve, they never actually said they were going to do it. Even if you ask them on their forums they will tell you that those are just rumors. I know it would be nice but dont you think they would release it for mac first? Plus not only do they have to port the Steam client but they have to do the games too.

im not saying this is a true test, its just the results surprised me. Now, a few factors, quake wars is not the most popular game, and its one of only a handful that came out for linux last year, so its far more popular amount linux users than windows users (% wise anyway). Im also not sure what a ps3/xbox user would be doing on the web portal anyway, so those are going to be very skewed. I was just happy to see linux have a significant share of that games market. It means that yes, linux users can be a significant force and generate some money. It also could mean that there are more linux users, and more linux gamers than anyone thought. There is no real good way to determine how many people use linux, and many of them also run it alongside OSX. Maybe the number is higher than thought.

another thought.

most game companies think windows first, then mac, then linux. Thats what blizzard does anyway. This pole seems to suggest that maybe linux and mac need to be flipped.

the poll is pretty much useless, you are asking the right question in the wrong place... if you ask a bunch of people in a forum you are gonna get a linux tilt because generally linux users cruise forums much more than windows users, and are especially excited about participating in polls and screaming their linux proudness from the roof tops. Thats just the way it is, im not trying to be mean or to generalize but its the truth.

There's also this little poll (http://community.enemyterritory.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15237) and these server statistics (http://etqw.splatterladder.com/?mod=statistic). These are considerably more underwhelming but they do still show that at least some people do buy games for Linux. The disproportionately high number of Linux users is probably due to the fact that ETQW isn't that great of a game. Windows users have plenty of other games to choose from, but we Linux users tend to take whatever we can get.

wasnt asking a question, just wanted to share some interesting information. Figured maybe it would prompt some interesting discussion. This forum better have a linux tilt ;-)

That game is made by Epic not id. Id releases Linux versions a day or two after the initial release.

well...not exactly. After the release of the game, id allowed its one linux programmer to start work on a port. I think it took about 1 month or so. The first one or two updates also lagged behind the windows release by a day or a few. Eventually everything caught up and now they are released on the same day. the linux version was fully featured but it lacked voice chat for a short time until that got ironed out. Oh yea, and the linux version doesnt have in-game adds because the advertising program does not run on linux. I bring this up because non of us mind not seeing adds, but it does mean that we do not get the exact same game.

So, kudos to id software for releasing a linux version. It would be nice to see linux get the same release date, but oh well.

Im dissapointed in epics ut3 delays (from what i understand, there is a problem with something besides the core game). I know the few linux games (NWN, id games) have separate downloadable installers, you just have to know that the game works on linux, the box makes zero references to linux. UT2004 had a linux installer on the disk, as well as a nice tux icon on the game box. That was sweet.

Please dont take this post as being greedy. I support any company publishing for linux. The delays are disapointing to be sure, but Id rather have a delay than nothing at all.

True. Im tired of having to try to get windows games running in wine which only work some of the time. So far the only ones i have working well in wine are Homeworld 2 and Simcity 4.

I played UT04 for years when it came out. I dont know if i can handle it anymore. I spent endless days skipping school to catch a few frags.
