I had problems with cups after updating to 8.10
Run a quick

$ sudo apt-get install cups

and then

$ sudo /etc/init.d/cups restart

Cupsd is non-existent in 8.10, just restart cups.

When I first installed Ubuntu 8.10 I configured it to the way I liked it and then remastered it. I used the remastered disk several times without any problems except the last time. It got hung up several time during the install and I think that was the problem. I loaded in the original live CD and everything works great. They say the third time is a charm and I guess they are correct as it is working now. I want to thank everyone for the assist.
