I'm trying to add text to a picture. I'll click on the text tool and create a little rectangle to put text in, but when I start to type, nothing happens. How can I just add a text layer in GIMP?
I am using the default text tool.

Did you select the color for the text? When you select the Text tool, you should see all the available text options (fonts e.g.) in the bottom half of the GIMP tools panel -- including a small window which displays the current color. Just click on that and you should get a panel that will let you change the color.

I can't see that, sadly. I guess that would be the bigger problem...

Have you opened a new file or an existing file before trying to put text in it ?
When you start gimp (2.6) you get an image window with nothing in it. Click on --> file --> new , select what you want and try then the text tool.
