i have an ethernet hooked up to an old dell tower using a timewarner motorola dsl modem ...after messing around for a while and talking to timearner techs, i had internet for about 40 mminutes then it went away. i called back and they said they do not support linux. how can i get my roadrunner dsl to work using a simple ethernet conection to a desktop tower. please help its an old computer for my mom to use and i have no prior experience with linux but it looks great so far.

i know my MAC address
its an old dell Pentium 3 tower
using an ethernet connection
ubuntu 8.10

PLEASE help me use this OS online im a total newbie

Put a router between them. Get instructions from the manufacturer and your DSL provider.

Between your Linux system and the router, you'll get DHCP and be on the router's local subnet. Using the router's built-in http interface, you'll put the DSL modem into pass-thru mode.

My guess is that is why you cannot get things to work.

Especially where this is an older PC, let more modern technology do the heavy lifting (router and DSL modem).
