I just installed Polipo (http://www.pps.jussieu.fr/~jch/software/polipo/), with the intention of using it as caching proxy from my working machine.

I have it daemonised & have only made some minor changes to the config file.

Having little proxy experience with Privoxy, that's approxymately it for me & proxies.

So my problem is getting Firefox to work properly?

Using the following setting in the Firefox Automatic Proxy Configuration URL:

http_proxy=http://localhost :8123

Probably gives me the best results, but I can't open all http: web pages & my ISP's web based email is blocked? Though I could check my other https: web based email account?

I have also used the same setting in the FF Manual Configuration fields in various combinations with worse results.

So, if anyone has the knowin' I'd love to hear it. As I'm out of my depth.

Thanks for you time. :-)

P.S.

I don't have any of the heavies like Tor/Privoxy/NoScript running at the mo'.

I let Polipo go & have been researching. :-)

The result of which has me planning to go to the recyclers tomorrow in the hope of picking up a cheap pentium II which I will set up with IPCop & the Advanced Proxy add-on, in an attempt to get an easily setup Firewall/Caching Web Proxy which (so long as it is not a problem) I will also add the NAS capability to the box, rather than have to run & power an additional machine.
