Well, just making my first post to say hello (and hopefully free up some screen real-estate by removing the persistent recommendation that I do so ... ;) )
I'm a somewhat experienced Linux user having run Slackware, Redhat, and Mandrake over the years. Then I was forced pretty much into Windows because of work for a number of years, but now I'm back at school, and it feels like a kludge running LaTeX, vim, cygwin, etc. on my Windows laptop - all things that just work naturally in Linux.
So I wanted to try a Debian-based distro this time and I'd heard about this Ubuntu thing. I tried the live CD (not really expecting it to work at all on my somewhat nonstandard Sony Vaio SRX87 laptop - especially since Knoppix had failed to even boot from the external firewire CDROM in the past) - but it booted straight into Gnome and looked great. Kudos to the developers for outstanding hardware detection! So as soon as school's out I will get stuck into the process of getting it fully installed and working properly - can't wait! (Unfortunately I do have to wait as I can't risk being without my computer through finals ...!)
Guess I might be posting a little as I try to get everything working, but from the browsing around the forums I've done, everything seems to be covered!
Cheers!
