oh snap, was JUST on the OpenSUSE site debating on downloading it.
KDE4.2 is looking sharp. Very nice.

It's too vista-like. It looks very nice, But I just don't like the vista look. KDE betas are notorious for changing appearances though, let's hope they fix that ugly white outline around the menu. I wish KDE had a tiling window function :(

Ehem, the only thing similar is the taskbar svg file... I'm really getting tired of explaining this.
Oxygen Style is completely different. The Oyxgen Icon theme is a lot better, tough they share some similarities in some icons. The Oxygen Plasma theme is completely different, taskbar svg aside as I already said...

I liked KDE 4 better than 3, but right now I'm inlove with XFCE so maybe I'll try KDE 4 when it hits 4.3. Thanks for the news

I wonder if there will be a repository for this in hardy, I want to see what KDE 4.2 can bring.
I just hope that plasma gets more stable and features I need are added.

That doesn't invalidate the criticisms. While the overall theme is quite nice and often differs from Vista, some of the most immediately obvious components of the GUI don't. This isn't so much an issue of aesthetics as it is an issue of giving new users a false impression that Linux works like a Microsoft operating system; which will only lead to frustration for the user.
If users see something familiar they'll be inclined to work on prior experiences and then have certain expectations of functionality.

Wow, looks awesome. Have to try it..
I don't think Vista when I look at it though. I have vista on my laptop and it's quite a different experience using it.

Why? KDE4.2 Beta 1 is not a OpenSuse only release. I'm busy upgrading to it on Arch :)

May I ask why? The only reason I didn't post the Kubuntu repositories is because they aren't available yet...

Is the famous live CD Opensuse(11 or 11.1)? Does it have an installer?

Awesome! I'll start downloading it now. I have stuck with KDE3 with version 11. I have been waiting for 4.2. It might convince me to switch.

You have stuck? You can install 4.2 along your KDE 3.5.x in OpenSUSE 11, you just need to use the 1-click install I posted:
OpenSUSE 11 (http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/UNSTABLE:/Desktop/openSUSE_11.0/KDE4-BASIS.ymp)

I tried that on my desktop to test the progress, but didn't like the menu being cluttered with two versions of apps. I was going to wait and see if 4.2 was far enough along to just completely switch and not look back.

Oh, I see :) Sorry I misunderstood you. Try it, I bet you'll stay with 4.2!

Just have a question. Is 4.2 deafult for 11.1? If not, once you 1 click install 4.2, is 4.1 replaced with 4.2, or they co-exist? Thanks for your input.

Nope, 4.2 didn't make it to 11.1 (since it's release in December while 4.2 is on January).
If you install 4.2 it will replace 4.1.

thanks. I'm playing with the live 64-bit right now in vbox. For the 4.2 KDE, is there a repo that you need to add to yast? How does the 1 click works?
It's been a while since I had my 6.2. In between I have been disappointed bec I could not even update an install from rc1 to rc2. I hope things a re now a lot better/improved?

Just click the link in the first post. It will open YaST one click install interface, just hit next (or advanced, it you want to select more packages), it will add the repos and install all the packages, and you will remain subscribed to the 4.2 buildservice repo, for future updates.
In short, just click the OpenSUSE 11.1 1 click install in the first post :)

if you are interested in kde, I wouldn't use kubuntu if i were you.
Kubuntu has Never done kde any justice, it has always been overly buggy and missing features. On the otherhand, Opensuse/Mandriva... even Fedora have great kde implementation.. especially opensuse... they have kde developers working for them who ensure it works great ;)

Luis just said no. Your best bet is to upgrade to jaunty but their version is stale - 4.1.73. Should have been 4.1.80 now.

here is a link to the Opensuse Live cd featuring Kde 4.2 beta.
its very much improved over 4.1, but still has another couple months worth of bug fixes before the final release.
http://home.kde.org/~binner/kde-four-live/
give the live cd a try if your not game on installing it, but if you got a spare hard drive or space... installing it will give you a better overall experience.

I get the following error when attempting the KDE 4.2 install on openSuSE 11.1. I enabled some other repos just to be sure these dependencies were not caused by a limited repo list, and I left the install DVD in the tray.
Should I choose the second option on each prompt?

This happens because those packages depend on the stable kde version.
I recommend you to add the following 2 repos, since they include some extra applications (like amarok for KDE 4.2):
1 click: Extra-apps (http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/UNSTABLE:/Extra-Apps/openSUSE_11.1/KDE4-DEFAULT.ymp)
Add the following repo trough yast: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Community/openSUSE_11.1_KDE4_UNSTABLE_Desktop/
I hope this helps you :)

why don't you just use the live cd that I linked previously?
it is OpenSuse 11 with Kde 4 beta 2...
Opensuse 11.1 isn't stable yet. let alone trying kde 4.2 beta on an unstable system.....
its as simple as installing the live cd and walah... no need to muck about ;)

I haven't test those, but they should work better than Project Neon, those are made by the kubu devs.

Lol to the Kubuntu Devs.... since when has kubuntu been EVER been a "Good" Kde Desktop....? short answer... Never.
but hey, don't take my word for it.
My advice would be... when you try Kubuntu and get disappointed, Give
OpenSuse a try with the latest Kde implementation and you will see the quality difference...

Even if I agree with your statement about OpenSUSE having a better KDE implementation, you shouldn't be bashing kubu devs, first because they're quite few, so they do what they can with the resources they have. I'm sure those packages are better than Project Neon ones.

Could someone please move this out of the OpenSuse subforum?

Dont mean to be rude but just because you have not many people developing it means nothing (thats just a excuse), it's the decisions they make that make it a not good or good KDE distro, from it's defaults to it's implementation.

The latest KDEs are always available for opensuse via one click install so even if 11.1 doesn't ship with 4.2 it will be easily available.

No, it isn't. They could take better decisions, indeed, but when you need to implement things, it matters.

there is only 1 Guy! that develops the Kde version of linux mint... And it is a Hundred times better than kubuntu with its kde implementation... Everything works beautifully... and they are both built from Ubuntu... You Notice the Difference Instantly....
they need to pick up their Game, thats for sure.(kubuntu devs)
and if you don't agree LuisAugusto... Then you obviously havn't tried Linux Mint Kde Edition...try it.
therefore... How does 1 man working with Linux mint relying on Donations.. create such a great kde implementation... compared to a TEAM of Kubuntu devs who produce Rubbish Every time??? think about it. Halt-Left is indeed Correct. and I just gave you a fair Comparison in distro's that have a lack of resources

Kubuntu was for a long time developed by just one person (actually, I'm not sure if its still like that).
And, as far as I remember, Mint uses KDE 3.5.x and it's maintained by the community...

And he's just using the KDE 3.5.9 super stable version and setting a theme style, he's such a genius...
(K)(X)Ubuntu developers aren't exactly the biggest open source contributor (those are Red Hat and Novell), but certainly do a lot more than Linux mint dev(s).
I'm not saying that Linux Mint is bad, it isn't. But bashing Kubu devs is unfair.

And Kubuntu was the worst? I highly doubt it. OpenSUSE has the best KDE desktop, yes, maybe Mandriva has the second one, and Kubuntu followed back there (in it's 3.5.x days)

Well actually, The latest kde edition of mint isn't out yet, and I don't believe the previous version used kde 3.5.9... even so... both Kubuntu and Linux Mint Kde edition have always been using the same version of Kde for their desktops Until Kde 4x came out... Even Before Kubuntu went to kde4 and was using the same version of Kde as Mint, Kubuntu's kde implementation has not been nowhere near up to the standard of Linux Mint. And thats a fact... I would like to know why myself... but its true.
Also, Linux Mint isn't just Ubuntu with a New theme, and kde chucked on top for the kde edition... Linux Mint is actually "Ubuntu" with many bug fixes, a few different configurations to improve the Desktop, and yes... a New Theme...
Linux Mint fixes alot of Ubuntu's issues... and as for "Boo" He doesn't just slap Kde on top, He recompiles it and configures it in a way to squeeze Maximum Performance out of it with Minimal bugs...Havn't you ever compared Kubuntu and Linux mint kde using the same version of kde before? havn't you ever noticed that Mint doesn't have the bugs that Kubuntu has???
So... there you go... My point proven. It may sound like I am bashing the Kubuntu devs, But I am actually Criticising their work because they have proven time after time over and over again that their kde desktop lacks quality compared to Most other Kde Desktops that are out there... the question is... "why?" I don't know why... But its a fact. Kubuntu is the worst Kde desktop out there. And in my mind... If 1 man can Make Linux Mint Kde so superior... then why can't Kubuntu? Maybe they should ask for some tips....
And I believe that Canoncial, "however its spelt, can't be bothered looking it up"
Should support Kubuntu MORE than they do... they claim to support the Kubuntu project but they Don't. I would like them to put some money into Kubuntu and Help make it a Superior Kde Desktop. If they did... I would switch back to Kubuntu in a second.. as I really like Debian based distro's, But I use OpenSuse because they have always and still currently have the Best Kde Desktop.

I'm not sure... but... KDE mint version is installed from the Ubu repositories, isn't it?
Again, I'm not saying that Mint is bad, but they don't do much (they made somethings for gnome, but not for KDE).

you can install kde from the ubuntu repo... ofcoarse. But Linux Mint Kde is not done using that method. The source code for Kde is compiled from scratch.
and as for your comment about Mint not doing much... Mint does what Ubuntu does...
eg: "Ubuntu takes from Debian, and still does... and improves upon it"
"Linux Mint Takes from Ubuntu, which takes from Debian, and improves upon it"
Ubuntu isn't a solo project you know... they still take from Debian.
Which is not a bad thing... afterall, thats what opensource is all about. "Sharing"

Doing a lot means improving applications, or making new ones.
And no, they don't use custom KDE packages, they use Ubu repositories packages, and as I never said anything you seem to answer aside of those, I'll just pass on them :)

Well actually, if you knew anything about linux mint, you would find that they do indeed have extra tools that they created...
such as : Mint Desktop, Mint Config, Mint Upload, Mint Wifi, Mint Space, MintMenu etc.... And I consider what mint are doing aside from that, such as bug fixes to Ubuntu to be doing a Hell of Alot! I applaude them. even though I do not use Linux Mint much anymore.
As for their Kde Implementation.. I have read that Kde in Mint is recompiled... whether this information is true or not, I don't know. I will ask Boo... However, Whatever he is doing... It is working Beautifully....

Dont know where you get the idea SUSE is so great with KDE, yes it WAS some years back but Fedora 10 just blows it out the water for all the right reasons.
To me OpenSUSE it no longer the best KDE distro and hasn't been lately. If you like Crystal icons mixed in KDE4.1, no ZUI and Aya then your not very KDE vanilla, it's not what KDE devs have made it to look like.

I haven't tested Fedora 10, but if you're comparing with OpenSUSE 11, that's the wrong approach, since OpenSUSE 11.1 will be released in around 10 days.
OpenSUSE is the best KDE distro, basely, because most KDE developers use OpenSUSE (or work for Novell), and Buildservice has bleeding edge packages if you want available.

Just because KDE dev use opensuse dont mean nothing, Aaron has already expressed his dismay at their decision to cut ZUI from the default desktop. It's funny how the default opensuse it not much like KDE4 default at all.
I find it a contradiction you say opensuse is best because of these reasons.

Slackware will have the best KDE 4 once Pat Volkerding decides that it's stable enough for inclusion. Fedora is usually good too.
Is there any talk about adding a tiling option to KDE 4?

Based on that argument Kuuntu should be the best KDE distro, they just install the default KDE desktop (very minors tweaking), OpenSUSE it's a good KDE distro because it backports features and add some things (and code things for it!).
And KDE devs use it because it has good quality up-to-date packages.

Yer and so does Fedora and mandriva, latest KDE4.1.3(from their update system) and backported features from 4.2, you can look at that two ways.
1: Nice 4.2 features in your 4.1.
2: Beta code in your stable 4.1 release.

Well, until I test Fedora 10 I can't truly say which is better (since I didn't know they backported features too).

Until OpenSuse 11.1 is released you can't compare.. as said before...
I've installed Fedora 10, and I did find it better than the current OpenSuse 11.1 Alpha, but... its not finished yet... give it a chance to get a Stable release, alot can change from the alpha to the Final Version....
although, I have also installed the OpenSuse 11 Kde 4.2 Beta, and it has blown me away... way better than fedora 10... but that is mostly because there have been much improvement from Kde 4.1.3 to Kde 4.2 beta...
We'll see... but Kde 4.2 is gonna be freakin Awesome when its stable release comes out, doesn't matter what distro its on...

It does matter. A release candidate shouldn't have any showstopping bugs. It's called a release candidate because it's supposed to be ready for release. The RC period is just a last-minute check for any undetected bugs.
