Curious how well my Dell Inspiron 1420n laptop would run WoW under Wine? Specs are as follows:
Intel® Core 2 Duo T5450 (1.66GHz/667Mhz FSB/2MB cache)
Jet Black
2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 at 667MHz
High Resolution, glossy widescreen 14.1 inch display (1440x900)
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
Size: 160GB SATA Hard Drive (5400RPM)
Integrated 10/100 Network Card and Modem
8X CD/DVD Burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer DVD+R write capability
Integrated High Definition Audio
Intel® 3945 802.11a/g Mini-card
85Whr Lithium Ion Battery (9 cell)
Built-in Bluetooth capability (2.0 EDR)
Intel Centrino Core Duo Processor
My only concern would be the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100. I don't want to go out and purchase it if it wouldn't run in a bearable fashion. I've found multiples instances of vid clips claiming to be running the X3100 chipset and running wow reasonably well at medium/low settings. I was just curious how well it would perform under Wine. Thanks for any advice/suggestions you can offer. =]

IMHO. Don't even tempt fate, just get a laptop with a decent Nvidia chipset.

Any other suggestions/opinions not involving purchasing a new machine? =]

The same as hikaricore above make sure it has a decent Nvidia chip set.

Personally, I would go ahead and give it a try (you could always download the demo). Your specs are better than the ones of my desktop machine that I use for playing WoW. The only thing I had to do was cut my graphics settings back to medium...after that the game is more CPU intensive than GPU intensive.
Also, from what I understand, there are open source drivers for the X3100 chipset that is supposed to give full 3d acceleration support.

I can run Compiz/other 3d apps fairly well. Thanks for a response not involving purchasing a new machine. =]
If I were to start a 10 day trial, would I be able to resume my created character when/if I choose to purchase the Battle Chest?

According to these two threads(#1 (http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=201104), #2 (http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=133881)), I realize they are 1+ years old, the X3100 chipset was capable of running WoW w/o too many issues on medium settings. Will running WoW under Wine stress the card even more so? I know I easily beat the minimum requirements, but just would prefer not to waste my money and/or time if WoW is simply going to be unbearable to play. I do not plan on doing any intensive raiding w/ this machine and would more than likely be doing lots of soloing/small groups.

My system:
Ubuntu 8.10
Intel Quad Core Q6600
Nvidia 8800GT 512MB
3GB RAM
It runs WoW with Wine and I get about 15fps as of recent. (Used to be 70+ before the latest WoW updates - I only have this issue when running it on Linux, under Wine though.)
You should be able to run it on Windows with low settings, perhaps medium at best, but don't bank on the latter. You may be disappointed if you tried it via Wine on Ubuntu.

I'll be trying it over the weekend. I suppose if needed I could dust off my XP partition and update some drivers. I'll post back w/ my results.

My mistake, I was tired and misread your original post.
Thought you were posting the specs of a system you were buying. >.<
Hope I didn't come off harsh.

Np, not at all. With the way you responded I had figured you may had missed something in my initial post. =]
Well I was able to get it running under Wine, although it's hellaciously choppy and pretty much unplayable. I ended up just dual-booting the machine w/ WinXP for the time being and am running around Azeroth now w/o too many issues. Hopefully I'll be able to throw together a decent gaming rig after the holidays. Thanks for all who posted.
