View Full Version : Any RTS games in the vein of 'Stronghold' ?

When I was in Iraq, a buddy of mine had a game called 'Stronghold' that I played the heck out of (when I had the chance). For anyone who has never played it, it allows you to build a castle in great detail. It mixes elements of simcity and ages of empires with the ability to really get down into the nitty gritty on your castle. It's amazingly fun to put in pitch pits and set your enemy or your town on fire.
Anyway, I was wondering if there are any simular games native to Linux that I can try. I can't seem to find anything close on my own. If there is nothing out there, I can always dual boot. Please forgive me if I'm just an idiot and there are tons of games just like it. I did a search and have been looking for about a week now with no luck.
Thanks in advance.

I've been looking off and on for a few months now and I haven't found anything. I recently bumped into www.happypenguin.org I haven't looked real hard there yet but they have links to tons and tons of linux games. Maybe you'll have luck there. Assuming of course you haven't looked there already.

stronghold is supported by cedega. so you should be able to run it with wine-cvs, or wine-packages from winehq.org, or cedega

I tried it with Wine and it doenst draw anything on the screen properly. It's all black with 2 lines of green going up and down. I have to kill the process to get out.
I'll keep trying to get it to work. It's my favorite time waster. If I was really keen, I would make an OS game like it. But alas, my programing experience is limited to DB work, not graphics and games.

Have you tried Cedega? Cedega CVS is free and in combo with a nocd-crack (use google for that one) it should work fine.

I have it installed on my XP partition, and I was trying to run it directly from there. I was trying to avoid re-installing it in ubuntu. Man, it's only been 2 weeks that I've been using Ubuntu exclusively (with the exception of playing Stronghold on XP) but every time I load up in XP now, I get frustrated with the way the windows work. I do still like XP; however, I like my Ubuntu Gnome desktop more.

as far as I know stronghold works in cedega http://cedegawiki.sweetleafstudios.com/wiki/Stronghold
while crusader (that one is stronghold as well) works perfectly in wine

i would do suggest installing it in linux and copy only from "in doze" your saves (but it is just my opinion as i have not been using "in doze" in the last three years)
good luck

I used the HOWTO guide on setting up a Win2KPro virtual machine, and it runs great in there. I also get to see just how horrible win2kpro looks
