playing xvid or avi movies

Any idea what program will allow me to view this type of file. I have vlc but can't get it to work. The movie will start then stop immediately saying I need proper codecs. Any help would be great. Steve

have you installed ubuntu-restricted-extras?

in synaptic search for restricted extras.

those extras include everything from flash to codecs
