I've used Ubuntu in the past, back in the 5.10 days. I've recently gotten around to using it again, in this case, 8.04. I've got a few points that I've come up with in my recent usage that I'd like to share.

The Good

1. As always, I got my cd free in the mail which is amazing.
2. Online forums have provided tons of help and even gone beyond that to provide information to feed my Ubuntu-related curiosities.
3. Great package management framework - I prefer apt-get to yum and I've had great experiences with it overall, Synaptic is nice as well. Good selection of games, great development tools (java6, g++, etc)
4. Universe and multiverse repos were automagically included, which I don't believe was the case last time.
5. Happy with overall package availability.

The Bad
1. This is fairly minor, but I was a little surprised that I had to add the KDE repos myself.
2. More freezing and system resource usage than I remember in previous versions. This is merely my experience, maybe be hardware related, and I've been known to make things explode a lot.
3. I've had some serious issues with Synaptic in KDE, particularly freezing-related though it's probably somehow my own fault.

Overally, I consider Ubuntu 8.04 a success but I am still keeping an open mind toward which distros I choose to use, especially considering system stability.

KDE is not very well integrated with ubuntu as Kubuntu(KDE desktop) is a community project and not officially supported/developed by canonical. For stability you should be using GNOME on ubuntu. If you want something lightweight, try XFCE - again it is community supported not from canonical.

If you want to use KDE then you have better distros for that purpose like OpenSuse where KDE is well integrated and fully supported by Novell.

I have a fair amount of experience with Gnome, KDE and XFCE and I have them all installed on my system currently.

My main gripe about KDE is that I used to be able to apt-get install kubuntu-desktop right from the get-go which I liked.

If you're looking for another distro to look into, I highly recommend you look into "Sabayon".
