I made a newbie mistake with Wine, and I wanted to pass on what I learned so that others will not suffer the same frustration. :)
I tried for what seemed like forever to get a certain program to work in Wine. I followed the instructions in the Wine AppDB to the exact letter! It just wouldn't work. I'm sure many of you reading this can relate.
What was my mistake? Simple, I was using the version of Wine that's available in the Ubuntu repositories (1.0.1). However, if you look at the Wine AppDB, it lists the version a program was tested in to get it's current certification (platinum, gold, etc...).
As a matter of fact, if you look at the programs tested on the Ubuntu distro of Linux, most were tested in versions of Wine after 1.0.1.
After upgrading to the current version of Wine, and some minor tweaking of some settings, it worked perfectly.
Even though the program I was installing was not World of Warcraft, I used the instructions on the Ubuntu Community Documentation page about installing World of Warcraft (http://help.ubuntu.com/community/WorldofWarcraft) to upgrade my version of Wine to the current version.
After upgrading to the current version of Wine, and some minor tweaking of some settings, it worked perfectly.
So please, before you give up completely, check to see if a new version of Wine is the answer.
