You could use xubuntu. It is very light on the resources.

Xubuntu is a good choice, but if you need 'very light', try either puppuy linux or damn small linux. Could also look at 'light' desktops such as fluxbox or jvm.

As said before - Xubuntu. You could customise the packages a little more too to make it even more light weight if you needed.

Sounds good guys. I have a few questions though. I've tried xubuntu, and the rat thing looks unappealing as well as the compressed menu. Anyway I could make it look less like xubuntu and more like something else, not particularily ubuntu, but definitely less wierd.

Xubuntu

You can have no taskbar, no desk icons, no panels. Just a plain wallpaper and right click for menus. I ran it on my GF's old P3(400MHz) laptop with 128 of RAM and 2MB vid ram and works like a charm. I used it for song compositions + more. Follow the story here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=856467

Damn Small Linux

Really small. I installed it in a 256MB flash drive. Fast. :)

If you want super uber challenge....You can use YOUR OWN LINUX!!!

No, it is not very light. It is almost as bad as Ubuntu is.

Vector Linux, Debian and Zenwalk would all be better choices for a lightweight setup. Xubuntu 8.04 is unusable with P1000 + 256 Mb, but Vector 5.9 is Ok.

i would consider arch, which lets you configure your system from scratch.

beware you will need some experience with the command line and linux in general to get it running, but if i could do it...i guess its no mistery :D

just pick a lightweight Desktop environment and you will be set.

I'd recommend Arch with LXDE its fast and very light mine uses 60mb ram in normal use.

Personally I like Slitaz, Puppy, /wolvix, and Zenwalk.
