I downloaded Ubuntu 64bit server edition and installed in rack server which has the following specs:

Intel Xeon 5460, S5000PSL
16GB FB DIMM
146*3 SAS HDD
(other details will be provided if necessary)

Right now the server is functioning as a stand alone pc. After successful installation of Ubuntu, I am getting the following error repeatedly while booting.

"buffer i/o error on device sdb, logical block 0"

What does this error mean? How to rectify it?

Thanks,
Jam, India.

I reinstalled Ubuntu in rack server, but this time with only one of the 3*146GB hdd and everything is fine now. However, the server edition has not installed the desktop environment and I don't know how to begin with from the command prompt (am a newbie). With some help from several websites and forums, I tried to sudo apt-get update, but the connection is refused due to proxy authentication. how to get the updates through proxy?
our campus proxy has username, password, proxy name and port. but i don't know how to configure such that i can update the present installation.
