I am curious because I have read some stuff on help.ubuntu.com and ubuntuforums.com. Which is better to utilize for a home based server that will be accessible through the internet, 8.04LTS Desktop or 8.04 LTS Server Edition?

Thank you for your help

If it will only be used as home server and you are comfortable with the command line then the server edition might be best for you. If you occasionally want to have access to Desktop GUI for any reason then you should probably go for the Desktop edition.

Or, you could use the server edition and install the actual desktop (of your choice) on top of it.

The server addition makes it easier to have some server applications installed, like Apache, MySQL, etc.

What I did was install the server version then used apt-get to install ubuntu-desktop.
