Most of us wants everything to just work, out of the box, and dont break..
We all know thats not happening, but if something doesnt work, and you'r new in this game, and looks to a forum post for help... Isn't a bit irritating when every freakin' time you try to do something, the login box popps up??](*,)
Why cant i just see the picture, get the needed info, fix it and get moovin'???

If you simply need a teeny weeny line of code you know is in that pic link, it's really anoying to be forced to register..

I registered here out of free will, and today i log in out of free will..
But nomatter where I go and need something fast and meet an annoying login/register page, i'll get my stuff elsewhere!
And i know i speak for a majority, e'special of fresh and newb users..
Doesn't it cinda work against "the cause" when newbs feel uncomfy here because of feeling forced to register?
I mean, these are the children of the free source generation! We don't want these blessed children running of to the evil MS would we??

Sorry if posted in the wrong place..

Building an online community where nobody has an account sounds tricky.

Moved to Ubuntu Testimonials & Experiences

You don't need to be registered to surf the forums or any other Ubuntu website, as far as I know. However, you do need an account to post feedback or ask questions on the forums, that is how forums work.

According to the forums homepage
Currently Active Users: 14379 (1068 members and 13311 guests)
Less than 10% of the people using these forums are registered (or at least logged in).

Tick the boxes to save your settings as most users do then you won't have any problems.
I don't come here for months and never get asked to login.

You donīt have to be registrated to find answer to your question on this forum.I donīt see anything bad to be register here. But maybe you feel different. If you want to ask questions here you have to be registered. It is quick and painless procedure, and after that you will be able to ask and answer to others.

If you cange your opinion register and ask what do you want to know and somebody will help you.

If there was no registration needed, this would be one big SPAM forum. I don't see that there is any problem with using a free account to get excellent personal tech support. ;)

if you tick the "login automatically" box, or whatever it is, plus tell firefox to remember, you should never have to login. seems like a childish complaint. all (good) forums require you to sign up and login.

even a windows user would not complain about this. :lolflag:

Check out the SLAX forums for an example of the dangers of allowing unregistered posts.

Really.
I love it when people speak for others. It's as if they contacted the majority, did a poll and were elected the spokesperson.

Not a good idea "bad3gakk" - assuming the right to speak for the majority.

Please stop assuming you speak for anyone other than yourself, unless you've been selected by the majority to be their representative. Anything else is just your opinion and opinions are like bellybuttons - most everyone has one.

Nothing mandates you must stay registered. I believe a primary reason for the forum to require registration is to assure compliance to the rules and regulations (code of conduct - COC). One of the main reasons this forum is users friendly and even child friendly. Opening this forum to anyone without controls, IMHO would result in chaos.

To the admins:
Keep up the good work... My grandson logs on to this forum and I so appreciate that the COC prevents him from being exposed to language and behavior of questionable content. A true benefit of the forum.=D>

it happens. for the most part i applaud the job the mods and admins do. their hearts must be into it.

I was thinking a bit south and west of this location.:KS

I have a list (albeit outdated) of sites and user names where I have registered that is 3 pages long. Its no big deal. I also have most of
them set to auto login ( thus the need for the list)occasionally I will
have to manually login, like if i do a complete reinstall.

south and west of the bellybutton is at the hip. :)

secondly, if you save/backup your .mozilla file (hidden folder in your /home folder) you can just re-insert it after a clean install and all of your "auto logins"(and everything else) will be the same.

I think I see the issue the OP is talking about.

If someone has an image attached to a post, you have to be logged in in order to view the attached image. Likewise, if someone has attached a .tar.gz for a theme to a post, you have to be logged in in order to download the attachment.

I'm not sure if that's a limitation of vBulletin or if that's a policy decision to limit bandwidth consumption for the forums.

I've moved this from Testimonials and Experiences to Forum Feedback and Help, since I think it's a legitimate piece of feedback, even if expressed in a confusing fashion.

An aside: I think the spammers/scammers have spidered the forums - I've been receiving "business" proposals at an email address that I've only used on these forums. Duly reported via Spamcop.....

It is a deliberate policy decision due to bandwidth issues. We have the bandwidth available to host attached files and serve them to logged in users, but we have so many who are not logged in and who use the forums (and who are very welcome to do so, btw) that we could not do so for them without a big increase in bandwidth usage.
