Hello everyone,
I am running an Acer Aspire 5720Z laptop, and it has decided to no longer see my DVD drive (acer are listing it as a 'DVD-Super Multi double layer' drive).
This is also the case in Windows Vista. Device manager isn't seeing it. I have been into bios and likewise nothing.
It still spins when I insert a disk - but nothing appears in the os.
Thanks for any help.

I would suggest that if it isn't being detected in Windows or Linux, that the drive is probably defective.

Did you use a 3rd party partitioning tool to create partitions?

Hi Yezinki
No, I used Ubuntu partition when I installed Hardy.
Everything has been working normally and it has just gone.
Thanks.

What were & are the Drive letters?
e.g HD : C, Internal Optical : D etc.

Yezinki.

If the drive doesn't show up in either Vista or Ubuntu then a diagnostic program wouldn't work either. I know back when I used windows, Nero had a test disk creator, and you used that along with Nero's diagnostic programs to check the drives fitness.

Hi J A Smith,
Were the 3 drives like this, C/D/E before you installed Hardy?
Did you manually add D drive or was it there from when you got the machine from the OEM?
Does it have any removable media drives like MMC/SD etc?
I would like to know the drives & their letters when you got the note book from Acer.
Regards,
Yezinki.

Everything is as it was OEM, before the DVD drive disappeared. The HDs remain unchanged.
I have a card reader, reading SD cards, and an external 500GB Freecom drive, along side USB memory sticks etc - all work normally.
Thanks cariboo - I'll delve into something similar - see what I can find.

Hi J A Smith,
Using windows/Vista, go in to hardware profile & check if you see the DVDRW/optical drive.
Uninstall/Delete it & than reboot your system.
Good Luck,
Regards,
Yezinki.
