I know this is a common refrain, and please bear with a complete Linux Newbie, but I recently wiped Vista off my VAIO (VGN-CR120E) and installed ubuntu (Ibex 8.10 - kernel 2.6.27-7-generic) and have been very pleased with the results thus far, but have a few nagging bugs I need to correct:

1) Screen brightness. I've scoured the internet and forums for two days now trying to find any fix for this but to no avail. None of the suggested tricks have worked, but I'm wondering if there's still just a setting somewhere I need to change. The brightness is always locked at maximum, ubuntu won't allow me to edit the configuration in sys/class/backlight/sony

2) Microphone/webcam: I expected these wouldn't work an honestly don't care that much, but if anyone is aware of a fix for either it'd be greatly appreciated.

What do you mean by "Ubuntu wont let me edit the configuration"? Does it throw back a "Permission Denied"? If it does, try running:

sudo gedit "your file name here"
