Network Monitor Alert Tool? Please Help!

hello all. I'm new to network monitoring but I could use some advice protecting my network. I have learned about some network utilities (wireshark, nessus) but they look a bit over my head and I'm not sure that they are exactly what I want. I'm looking for a program that can monitor network activity and then send an alert if susipicous network activity is going on. Any ideas?

Try Firestarter, it's in "Add,Remove Programs".

ah, i found what i needed. looks like intrusion dectiontion system is the best bet. thanks, though I wouldn't recommend firestarter.
