Guide For The Firefox Junkie (tons of extensions)

Hello fellow Firefox junkies.

I assume you already have some version of Firefox 1.5. If you do not look here:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FirefoxNewVersion

DISCLAIMER: Installing all these will bog down Firefox. Pick and chose.

Ok on with the show.

First things first. You need this extension- Restart Firefox:

https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?application=firefox&id=1249

Makes it easier to restart Firefox after installing many other extensions.

Tab Junkies Extensions

Are you a tab junkie like me? Then look at these awesome extensions.

My favorite is Tab Preview:

http://ted.mielczarek.org/code/mozilla/tabpreview/

Nice options, awesome effect. Little preview of what each tab has in it as you cross the top with your mouse. Great way to go about things. You have to allow the site by clicking that one pop-up thing in the top right part of the browser.

Next is a popular one, foXpose:

https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=1457

Worth installing Firefox 1.5 for. When you install it an kill Foxfox the keyboard combination:

CRTL+SHIFT+X

Or by clicking the button in the bottom corner on left (near status bar).

Next is Tab Sidebar:

http://users.blueprintit.co.uk/~dave/web/firefox/tabsidebar/index.html

Yet another way to go about tabs. Really sweet.

Next is a lifesaver. Tabbrowser Preferences

https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?application=firefox&id=158

THE Firefox extension for tabs. I honestly have not messed with it much in 1.5 (I got use to default behavior) but just installing it made it so middle click killed tabs again like I prefer.

Finally: Tab X:

https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?application=firefox&id=785

And a close button to each tab like Epiphany.

Make Browsing Better Extensions

Ad Block. I bet you all have this already.

https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?application=firefox&id=10

But remember how you used to have to mess with filters? Now its an extension too:

https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=1136&application=firefox

Sweet.

My favorite one of all time is next. Session Saver:

https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=436&application=firefox

It changes your life.

Next one is really cool. StumbleUpon:

https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=138&application=firefox

I can't explain it. Really. Its the coolest extension here, and I can't explain it well. Closest I can come is to quote a review on the page from Christina:

Whatever your interests, Stumbleupon will help you find web pages about them.

For all the Download Extensions ,this one is the best:

https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?application=firefox&category=Popular&numpg=10&id=26

Fixes the problem with Firefox's download manager.

Next one is for Gmail users. Is a Gmail delete button:

https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?application=firefox&id=882

Man thats nice!

Last cool one is All-In-One-Gestures:

https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?application=firefox&id=12

I don't use it, but I couldn't leave it off the list.

Alright, enjoy.

It does. Check your about:config to see the changes (well, those that you can spot anyway).

I just use:
Tabbrowser preferences.
Fasterfox.
Download Manager Tweak (hate the DL popup)
and sometimes NoScript.

OK, I have to know. What is THE problem with Firefox's download manager. I've never had a problem with downloads. Currently running 1.5 beta 2.

That it exists. This allows you to manage downloads from within the main Firefox window.

Yeah. It is basically just a basic GUI implementation of modiying certain about:config properties like pipelining and the such. However, I have only noticed about 10-12% speed increases. Just enough for me to keep it installed.

I'd recommend NoScript as well. It allows you to create a whitelist for sites that you want to allow to run javascript. If you choose to do so, it will also let you block java, flash, and other plugins (until you click on them).

I've just installed this and think it is great. I installed it after clicking on a link that was full of firefox exploits and would spawn never-ending instances of thunderbird. Very annoying. I revisited the site after installing this extension and it stopped it cold. Also, if you've been seeing some popups that circumvent the inbuilt pop-up blocker, this seems to have stopped them from me. Best thing is I don't lose any functionality since I can just whitelist a site I need javascript for.

Thanks for the list Poofyhairguy. My favorite on that list is all-in-one gestures. Once you get used to it, you'll never want to browse the old way again :D

first of all, Tabbrowser Prefences is very limited. I recommend Tab Mix Plus, instead.

second, you might want to link to adblock plus instead of the standard, as it has a few extra features.

third, Filterset.G blocks all ads, but blocks alot of legit stuff, too... maybe we should make a forum list, too?

However, I've never been able to use this extension without it causing problems of some sort. Most recently it would not let me enter anything in the address bar manually. Apparantly, I'm in the minority though as it's immensely popular.

Since you have All-in-One Gestures, you can set up a mouse gesture for this feature. No need for a separate extension. ;)

I get overwhelmed by too many mouse gestures. I like things the way they are. :-)

Nice list even though it isnt very Ubuntu specific..

Anyway, I used to have an extension that disabled those empty tabs from popping up when opening a download but I forgot what it was called. Anyone out there that use it and could refresh my memory?

A few more I haven't seen listed:

FireFTP:
http://fireftp.mozdev.org/
Full on FTP client inside firefox - very cool - although it doesn't support SFTP yet.

Scrapbook:
http://amb.vis.ne.jp/mozilla/scrapbook/

This is one of those tools that makes me wonder where the hell its been for the last X years online.

Simply put, it allows you with a right click to save snippets/whole webpages in a nicely organised side bar, and remembers where everything came from. You like a quote? you highlight, right click, and it's saved for you.

You can also annotate each one with some of your own words, so you can remember why you've done it. It really is like using paper, without having to read your own handwriting.

Sage:
http://sage.mozdev.org/
This is a RSS reader that works so nicely. Add RSS feeds to sage and
then open the sidebar, and you'll see why RSS is such a good idea.

Forecast Fox:
https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=398
Local weather, in the bottom of your browser. Of course, you could
just look out the window, but that won't tell you that tomorrow it's
gonna rain.

Flashblock:
http://flashblock.mozdev.org/
Blocks all Flash - and replaces with a button - click the button and
it will show it - great for stopping adverts. Features a white list,
so flash you like won't be blocked.

Foxytunes:
http://www.iosart.com/foxytunes/firefox/
Control your music player inside the browser - very useful when you
want to skip a song and don't want to switch windows...

Web Developer Toolbar:
http://www.chrispederick.com/work/firefox/webdeveloper/
Adds a tool bar that really helps when you develop webpages - it
allows you to do all sorts of things, like disable parts of the site,
change the css live, resize your webbrowser so you can see what it
looks like in a different resolutions, and a whole lost more...

Colorzilla:
http://www.iosart.com/firefox/colorzilla/
Adds an eye dropper to Firefoz, so you can get the RGB or HEX code of
any color on a website, it also allows you to zoom the webpage up to
any size with a right-click.

Webmail compose:
http://jedbrown.net/1.0/mozilla/extensions/
Changes mailto: links to work with most popular webmail. Defaults to
gmail, but works with hotmail, yahoo, mail.com and others.

View Rendered Source
http://jennifermadden.com/scripts/ViewRenderedSource.html
Does a basic rendering of webpage source code to make it easier to read

I added two more to the list of my must-have extensions:

TMobile (USA) Minutes Used
Tab Preview (http://ted.mielczarek.org/code/mozilla/tabpreview/)
