What are the primary differences between Easy Ubuntu and Automatix? And, which is best to use for the average power user?
Thanks,

Automatix is an Easy Ubuntu based script for power users.
Easy Ubuntu is for newbies.

I must point out that Easy Ubuntu is free-libre software licenced under the GPL, while Automatix is proprietary (non-free).

while Automatix is proprietary (non-free).
So it has a licence that restricts modification and public distribution of the script without arnie's permission.
It's still free to use and it does a great job.
Edit: Earlier versions of Automix are now gpl'd

????
I think that Automatix is based on Easy Ubuntu so it must be GPL! (and a bash script IS opensource)

so it must be GPL!
The author says that he asked you for permission to use the code. He says that you described certain conditions for him to do that, including changing the name. If that constituted a different licence by which you let him use the code, then he is in his right to not licence it as GPL.
If this is not the case and you always intended for it to be GPL, then you must say so since there seems to be a misunderstanding (or a lack of education)

the earlier (read as very early) versions of automatix were roughly based on Easy Ubuntu. I asked keyes' permission before doing anything. He also implored me to change the name which I did. As I have mentioned in the Automatix license, all versions prior to version 3.4.4 are GPL-ed as well.. so that nobody feels cheated.
as for the rest of it, its easy to comment without premise and flame me down.. but I have put in atleast two months of effort into getting automatix to the stage where it is today... if u really want some more proof.. here is one helpful link (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=90931). I have known u on these forums for a long time.. and the least u cud do is atleast appreciate my effort.

Arnie

It's true I've allowed arnieboy to use my code (anyone can use my code it's GPL) but of course under the GPL!
And yes I've asked him to change the name (because this isn't the same goal).
Linus has put more than two months of effort coding the kernel but it's at least GPL.
Sharing efforts it's better than to want personal glory.

Don't mean to play devil's advocate, but you should check on this. If you don;t uphold the gpl he can do whatever he wants with the scripts because you failed to aknowledge your property. You should also check if he is changing the license on any of your code. The gpl is clear any changes made to the source must be put back into the source it came from. I might be wrong about this, but this is what I understand of it.
Besides, I don't particurlarly like the way he takes criticism, not very objective.

Automatix (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=66563) updated to version 3.4.7 with the General Public License
The automatix license ceases to be effective for the present and all future versions of automatix starting now.
I hope those of you who misunderstood my intentions discontinue doing so.

This thread swayed off the topic.
Easy Ubuntu's coming version will be a lot like aut'x in several ways. It is made as a next version of EasyBreezy, in fact, and that was a fork of automatix. The team only decided to use good old EasyUbuntu's name, because it isn't version specific (unlike EasyBreezy).
So EasyUbuntu is a script that takes care of pretty mich the same stuff as aut'x , but among it's objectives are
1) safety - it will NOT bork your install. The reason for this emphasis is why aut'x was forked in the first place - too many people having to reinstall (namely those asking on IRC in #ubuntu)
2) Software Freedom - although it does install several proprietary packages, it will mark them visibly and will ALWAYS be GPL.
3) Capability to set up thing that an OS should already have, but doesn't for various reasons (legal or human-factor), such as codecs and Num-Lock.

No, you cannot - yet. [K/X]ubuntu support is possible, planned, but not yet implemented. Sorry.
